August 7, 2018 - International League (IL1)
Rochester Red Wings News Release
The Rochester Red Wings dropped a 5-1 contest to the Toledo Mud Hens Tuesday night at Frontier Field. The series continues Wednesday night on Roc The Roc Night, plus $1 Wednesday with $1 Zweigle's hot dogs, peanuts, chips, and Cracker Jack.
Toledo got on the scoreboard in the second inning, as Mikie Mahtook hit an RBI double off of Rochester starter Zack Littell to bring home Jason Krizan, giving the Mud Hens a 1-0 lead. Two batters later, Jarrod Saltalamacchia hit an RBI single to score Mahtook, making the score 2-0.
In the fifth, the Mud Hens gave starting pitcher Matt Hall more room to work with, as Dowel Lugo hit a ground ball to Nick Gordon, which resulted in a throwing error that allowed Dixon Machado to score from second. A throwing error was then charged to Willians Astudillo on the same play after he attempted to throw out Lugo at first base, resulting in Christin Stewart scoring from first, giving Toledo a 4-0 lead.
One batter later, Mahtook added onto Toledo's lead after hitting an RBI single to score Lugo, extending the deficit to 5-0.
Littell was then relieved by Luke Bard after 4.2 innings, allowing five runs (two earned) on five hits while striking out three and allowing five walks. He threw 96 pitches, 61 for strikes. The five walks were a season-high for Littell.
Bard worked 2.1 innings, allowing one hit while striking out two. In relief, the Red Wings called upon John Curtiss and Curtiss fanned three while allowing a hit and a walk in two innings.
Hall went 7.0 innings before being relieved, allowing no runs on one hit while striking nine and allowing no walks. He threw 101 pitches, 69 for strikes.
Rochester managed to put themselves on the scoreboard in the bottom of the eighth, as Edgar Corcino started off the inning with a stand-up triple. The following batter, Juan Graterol, then hit an RBI single to cut the deficit to 5-1.
The Mud Hens out-hit the Wings 7-6.
Winning pitcher: Hall (2-0)
Losing pitcher: Littell (3-5)
Save: none
NOTES: Edgar Corcino made a tremendous running catch in right field to rob Christin Stewart of an extra base hit in the seventh inning.
THIS DAY IN RED WINGS HISTORY
1933- 15,000 fans were at Red Wings Stadium for the first home night game against the Newark Bears. The final score was 4-0, and unfortunately the Red Wings did not come out on top. The lights from the stadium were so bright, people could read the paper on the porches on Norton Street without any problem.
THIS DAY IN INTERNATIONAL LEAGUE HISTORY
1956 - An all-time Minor League Baseball attendance record is set in Miami, Florida to highlight the city's first season as a member of the International League. Shifting a regular season game to the mammoth Orange Bowl, Miami draws 57,713 fans for a night contest against the Columbus Jets. With the ageless Satchel Paige on the mound, the Marlins defeat the visiting Jets 6-2. Paige works 7 2/3 innings, improving his record on the year to 10-3. Proceeds of the game are donated to charity.
