Syracuse, NY - The Syracuse Chiefs shut out the Charlotte Knights on Tuesday night, 2-0, behind a stellar pitching performance by Chiefs starter Kyle McGowin. The 26-year-old threw eight scoreless innings en route to the win.
Syracuse (48-66) scored the lone runs of the game in the bottom of the seventh inning. José Marmolejos led off with a ground rule double down the left-field line. Pedro Severino followed with a single to right field, placing runners on the corners. Chris Dominguez then grounded into a fielder's choice where Marmolejos was tagged out between third base and home plate, Severino moved to second on the play, and Dominguez was safe at first. Irving Fall also grounded into a fielder's choice where Severino advanced to third, Dominguez was out at second, but Falu beat the throw to first. Victor Robles then walked to load the bases. Andrew Stevenson followed with an infield single to the left side of the infield, scoring both Severino and Falu to put Syracuse in front, 2-0.
Charlotte (51-60) was held in check by McGowin, in his third start with the Chiefs this year. McGowin was perfect through five innings and allowed just two hits and a walk the entire night while striking out nine batters in his eight innings pitched. McGowin has now pitched to a 0.86 ERA in three Triple-A starts this year. Koda Glover pitched a scoreless ninth inning with a game-ending strikeout to pick up the save.
The Chiefs and the Knights continue their three-game series with the second game on Wednesday night. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m.
