Lehigh Valley IronPigs News Release
The Lehigh Valley IronPigs (39-31) dropped a 5-3 heartbreaker in 10 innings to the Buffalo Bisons (37-33) on Sunday afternoon at Coca-Cola Park.
Jio Mier's two-run shot in the top of the 10th off of RHP Michael Mariot (1.0 IP, H, 2 R, 2 ER, BB, K) gave the Bisons a 5-3 lead and proved to be the difference in the game.
Mariot was tagged with the loss for the IronPigs and drops to 1-2 on the year.
LHP Aaron Loup (1.0 IP, H, 2 K) earned the win for Buffalo to improve to 2-0 on the season. RHP Dustin Antolin retired the side in order in the 10th to notch his seventh save of the year.
Andy Burns' solo shot in the top of the second off of Pigs starter David Buchanan gave the Bisons a 1-0 lead.
Buffalo extended the lead to 2-0 with a run in the fifth as Burns led off with a double, advanced to third on a single and scored on Junior Lake's sac fly.
The Pigs got on the board in the fifth with a pair of runs to tie things at two as Cedric Hunter and Emmanuel Burriss (2-5, RBI) each came through with RBI singles in the frame.
In the bottom of the sixth, Nick Williams led off with a double, advanced to third on a single from Darin Ruf and later scored on Brock Stassi's (2-4, 2B, RBI) two-out RBI double to give the IronPigs a 3-2 lead for the time being.
Bisons starter Wade LeBlanc (n/d) allowed the three runs on 10 hits while fanning four over six innings of work.
Buffalo tied it at three with a run in the seventh when Casey Kotchman led off with a single, advanced to third on a single up the middle on a potential double play ball that deflected off the glove of both Buchanan and SS J.P. Crawford (2-5) and scored when A.J. Jimenez grounded into a 4-6-3 double play.
The Bisons had a runner at third with two outs in the eighth, but RHP Edward Mujica (1.1 IP, K) came on in relief of Buchanan and got Matt Dominguez to ground to short and end the threat.
Buchanan (n/d) allowed three runs on nine hits to go along with four strikeouts in 7.2 IP.
Darnell Sweeney (3-4) also had a multi-hit game for Lehigh Valley.
The Pigs will open a four-game set with the Norfolk Tides on Monday night at Harbor Park. First pitch is slated for 7:05 p.m. as LHP Anthony Vasquez (0-0, 8.31) will be on the bump for the Pigs against Tides LHP T.J. McFarland (1-1, 1.69).
