Syracuse Mets News Release
Syracuse, NY - The Syracuse Chiefs snapped a seven-game losing streak with a walk-off win over the Columbus Clippers Sunday afternoon, 2-1. Brian Goodwin drove in the winning run in the tenth inning, plating Trea Turner with a sacrifice fly to give Syracuse the victory.
Columbus (37-33) scored the game's first run in the top of the tenth inning. Erik Davis entered the game on the mound for Syracuse to begin the frame. Guillermo Quiroz led off for the Clippers with a single. After Yhoxian Medina replaced Quiroz on the basepaths, a Joey Butler sacrifice bunt put the Clippers in scoring position. Erik Gonzalez then hit a two-out single to center field, plating Medina to give Columbus a 1-0 lead.
The Chiefs overcame the deficit in the bottom of the tenth inning. Joseph Colon came on to work the tenth inning for the Clippers. Jhonatan Solano led off the frame with an infield single. Tony Campana then replaced Solano on first with a fielder's choice. Turner walked to bring up Steve Lombardozzi with runners on first and second. Lombardozzi ripped a double to left field, which brought Campana around to score and tie the game. With runners on second and third, Goodwin then came up, and sent a fly ball to right field. Butler caught the ball moving in, but his throw to the plate was too late, and Turner scored to give the Chiefs a 2-1 win.
Syracuse starter Jaron Long was impressive on the mound for the Chiefs in just his third Triple-A start. Long threw seven scoreless innings while allowing five hits, with all of them coming prior to the fourth inning. After giving up a single to Erik Gonzalez in the third, Long didn't allow another baserunner, setting down 15 consecutive Columbus batters before exiting the game. Bryan Harper and Rafael Martin worked scoreless eighth and ninth innings, with both relievers striking out two batters.
Mike Clevinger was equally as impressive forColumbus. The Clippers' starter worked five and two-third innings, allowing just two hits while striking out eight and walking four. Clevinger was relieved by Toru Murata, who gave up just one base hit to Jason Martinson in two and one-third innings on the mound. Ben Heller worked a scoreless ninth for Columbus before Colon came on in the tenth.
Syracuse now heads on the road for a four-day trip, which includes five games against the Pawtucket Red Sox, including a doubleheader on Tuesday. Paolo Espino is scheduled to get the start Monday against Pawtucket's Sean O'Sullivan. First pitch is set for 7:05.
