Gwinnett Stripers News Release

MOOSIC, PA - The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (41-30) broke a scoreless tie with a run in the bottom of the sixth inning and limited the Gwinnett Braves (31-38) to four singles in a 1-0 win on Sunday afternoon in the finale of the three-game series at PNC Field.

Both starting pitchers, Joel De La Cruz of Gwinnett and Phil Coke of Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, were in command most of the day, but after five and a half scoreless innings, the RailRiders finally broke through.

In that inning, Pete Kozma led off with an infield single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Jonathan Diaz. Ben Gamel followed with an infield single to put runners at first and third. Donovan Solano then drilled a single to center, scoring Kozma for a 1-0 lead.

The G-Braves had two opportunities to score. In the top of the fourth, back-to-back singles by Anthony Recker and Rio Ruiz put runners on the corners with two outs. However, Ronnie Mustelier flied out to deep right to end the inning. Then in the top of the ninth, Ozzie Albies led off with a single off reliever Matt Wotherspoon. A sacrifice bunt by Daniel Castro moved Albies to second and a ground out to short by Reid Brignac pushed Albies to third, but Recker went down swinging to end the game with the tying run stranded 90 feet away.

De La Cruz (L, 1-2) pitched 7.0 innings and was credited with a quality start with five hits, one earned run, one walk and two strikeouts. Ryan Weber worked a scoreless, hitless bottom of the eighth.

Coke went 5.0 innings with three hits, no runs, one walk and three strikeouts. Giovanny Gallegos (W, 3-0) pitched 3.0 innings of relief for the win. He stuck out three. Wotherspoon (S, 2) worked the top of the ninth with one hit and one strikeout.

At the plate, Ruiz and Emerson Landoni were each 1-for-3 for Gwinnett.

For the RailRiders, Solano was 1-for-3 with an RBI. Kozma was 1-for-3 with a run scored.

The G-Braves return home on Monday to begin a seven-game homestand at Coolray Field. Monday night will be game one of a four-game series against the Indianapolis Indians. Right-hander Casey Kelly (2-2, 2.82) will start for Gwinnett, while Indianapolis will counter with right-hander Chad Kuhl (5-2, 2.54).
