Pigs and Chiefs Split Twin Bill
August 4, 2018 - International League (IL1)
Lehigh Valley IronPigs News Release
Lehigh Valley split their doubleheader with the Syracuse Chiefs on Saturday, falling 3-1 in game one, and earning an 11-5 win in game two. After the split, the Pigs hold on to their ten game lead in the IL North Division, and stay at their season-best mark of 26 games above .500.
The first matchup zipped by, taking just under an hour and forty-one minutes to complete. Tom Eshelman (2-10) logged his third consecutive quality start for the Pigs, but took the loss by giving up three runs on a pair of home runs. Lehigh Valley only managed three hits and one run against Philips Valdez (4-7), none more important than a one-out single by Dean Anna to stretch his hitting streak to 22 games, the second longest in IronPigs history, one shy of the 23 game streak by Scott Kingery in 2017.
Each side got working early in the second game, with a run from Syracuse in the first inning, followed by the Pigs plating a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame, including an RBI double from Joey Meneses. The Pigs held that lead for the rest of the game, mostly thanks to an offensive explosion in the fourth inning, where ten batters were sent to the plate and six scored runs, highlighted by a three-run home run from Meneses, his 21st of the year. The lead was more than enough for a combination of five Pigs relievers to earn the win.
The two teams will square off for the final time this year to see who takes the three-game series tomorrow afternoon at 1:35 p.m. Kids will have plenty to get to the park for, with a youth cap giveaway available for 1,500 kids 17 and under presented by The Outlets at Sands Bethlehem, and postgame Kids Run the Bases presented by Lehigh Valley Children's Hospital.
