MOOSIC, Pa. - The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders split a doubleheader with the Buffalo Bisons on Saturday night at PNC Field. The RailRiders won the first game 3-1 and fell 6-4 in the nightcap.

In game one the Bisons got on the board in the top of the second when Tim Lopes dropped an RBI single into right field, chasing home Danny Jansen. Nestor Cortes was able to limit the damage in the frame, stranding two runners on base.

The RailRiders struck back in the bottom of the third against Matt Tracy. L.J. Mazzilli dropped a one-out base hit and advanced to third on a Tyler Wade single. On the next pitch, Abiatal Avelino brought home Mazzilli with an opposite-field single to knot the game at 1-1. The RailRiders proceeded to load the bases with one out, but Tracy evaded further trouble in the stanza.

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre took the lead in the bottom of the sixth when Zack Zehner walked and advanced to second on a bunt single from Mark Payton. With Jose Fernandez summoned from the bullpen Wilkin Castillo attempted a sacrifice bunt. Fernandez threw wildly to third base, allowing Zehner to score the go-ahead run for the RailRiders. Three batters later, Abiatal Avelino brought home Payton with an infield single.

Cortes (5-5) lasted 6.0 innings, allowing one run on three hits, walking two and striking out seven in one of his strongest starts of the year. Cale Coshow shut the door in the top of the seventh with a 1-2-3 inning for his fourth save of the season.

In the nightcap, the Bisons grabbed the lead with a two-out rally in the top of the second when Roemon Field doubled to score Tim Lopes. They expanded the lead against Raynel Espinal in the top of the third with a five-run rally, capped by a three-run home run from Richard Urena.

The RailRiders chipped away in the bottom of the third against Thomas Pannone. Francisco Diaz walked and two batters later Avelino tripled to left-center, chasing Diaz home with the Baby Bombers' first run of the contest.

Mike Ford led off the bottom of the fourth with a double, and advanced to third on a Reese McGuire passed ball. Ronald Torreyes hit a ground ball to first base that Rowdy Tellez fielded and threw away, allowing Ford to score and Torreyes to advance to third. Zehner followed with a double to plate Torreyes and narrow the gap to 6-3.

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre put together a two-out rally in the bottom of the fifth, with Zehner delivering a run-scoring base hit to cut the deficit to 6-4. The RailRiders brought the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the sixth and seventh innings but were unable to score as Conor Fisk and Justin Shafer closed out a Bisons victory.

Stephen Tarpley was superb out of the bullpen for the RailRiders in game two of the doubleheader, allowing only two hits in 3.2 scoreless innings. Joe Harvey kept Buffalo at bay over the final 1.1 innings of the game.
