From the Notes
ABOUT LAST NIGHT: The Indians scored a total of 10 runs from the fourth through the sixth innings en route to a 12-7 win last night over Toledo. Pablo Reyes hit a solo homer in the fourth that broke a 1-1 tie, and the Indians added a Wyatt Mathisen grand slam in the fifth that made it 7-1. The Mud Hens scored five runs in the home half to pull within one, but the Tribe answered with four more in the sixth to keep Toledo at a distance. Kevin Newman roped a two-run double and Ryan Lavarnway later doubled home Reyes to cap the inning. Tanner Anderson (2.2ip, 3h, 1r/er, 1bb, 3k) took over for Brandon Waddell in the fifth and earned the win to improve to 2-2 on the season. Jesus Liranzo tossed two scoreless innings to finish off the series-leveling victory.
PABLO STREAKING: Pablo Reyes has hit safely in six straight games and seven of his last eight overall to elevate his average from .294 to .305 in 85 games for the Tribe. He's hit .455 (10-for-22) with three homers, four RBI and seven runs scored during his six-game streak and is batting .400 (12-for-30) over his last eight contests.
LAVARNWAY STREAKING: Indians catcher Ryan Lavarnway is riding a 12-game hitting streak dating back to July 21. During the stretch he's posted a .400 average (18-for-45) with three home runs, three doubles, six RBI and six runs scored. He has a .438 OBP and .667 SLG in his last dozen games, as well. He had a career-high tying 14-game hitting streak from June 3-28 earlier this season, a stretch is which his triple-slash line was .353/.431/.647.
PABLO POWER: Pablo Reyes logged his second 4-hit game of the season in last night's triumph, the other coming on July 19 at Gwinnett. He now has seven 4-hit games in his career. He also scored a career-high four runs in the 12-7 win, becoming the first Tribe player with four runs scored in a single game since Jordan Luplow on July 6, 2017 at Columbus. Reyes, 24, has belted eight home runs on the season -- six since July 12 -- tied for the fourth-highest total in the IL with Charlotte's Eloy Jimenez since that date.
BY THE NUMBERS - 9: Pablo Reyes had nine total bases in last night's 12-7 victory, the most by a Tribe player in 2018 and the second-highest total of his career (10 on 7/15/17 with Altoona vs. Bowie). His nine total bases are the most by a Tribe player since Danny Ortiz had 10 on 7/6/17 at Columbus.
MATHISEN'S MASH: Wyatt Mathisen's grand slam in the fifth last night was the first of his career and second by a Tribe player in 2018 (also: Max Moroff, June 8 @ Pawtucket). Indy hadn't recorded multiple grand slams in a season since 2016, when the Tribe belted five. Josh Bell had two that year and Pedro Florimon, Danny Ortiz and Alen Hanson each had one. Hanson's slam on Aug. 15 vs. Louisville was a walk-off homer, the last walk-off HR by a Tribe player.
WYATT HOMERS = WIN: The Indians are 6-0 in games in which Wyatt Mathisen has homered this season. All six of his homers in a Tribe uniform have come with runners on base (five 2-run HRs, one grand slam).
12 RUNS: The Indians' 12 runs last night was their highest total since scoring a dozen runs in a 12-7 win over Columbus at Victory Field on May 13. Their highest scoring output was on April 27 at Columbus, a 17-5 victory. Indy's 12 runs vs. Toledo was its most in the head-to-head series with the Mud Hens since a 13-3 win at Fifth Third Field on Sept. 3, 2017.
27 STEALS: Kevin Newman has been a consistent threat on the bases for Indy this season en route to a league-best 27 stolen bases in 36 attempts. He ranks fourth among Pirates organizational leaders in stolen bases behind Jared Oliva (29), Alfredo Reyes (28) and Cole Tucker (28). He has more than doubled his previous career high for stolen bases in a season (2015, 13 SB in 15 attempts). The Indians have had a player lead the International League in stolen bases just twice in team history. Don Buford swiped a league-leading 42 bases on Indy's 1963 Governors' Cup Championship team, and Alen Hanson tied for the IL lead in SB with 35 in 2015, matching Pawtucket's Quintin Berry.
27 DOUBLES: Newman has also racked up a team-high 27 doubles this season, the second-highest mark in the IL behind Columbus' Brandon Barnes (32). His two-bagger total is just two shy of matching his career high of 29 set in 2017 between Double-A Altoona (18) and Indianapolis (11).
WIN-DIANS IN TOLEDO: The Indians are 6-2 at Fifth Third Field this season and have two games remaining on Toledo's home field, tonight and tomorrow night. Last night's win guaranteed the Indians winning more games than losing at Fifth Third Field for the sixth time in eight seasons. Since 2011, the Tribe are 50-35 at Toledo. The year-by-year breakdown of Indy's record at Toledo over the last eight seasons is below:
2011: 6-4 2012: 7-4 2013: 7-3 2014: 5-5 2015: 8-4 2016: 7-5 2017: 4-8 2018: 6-2
SEASON SERIES VS. THE MUD HENS: The Indians own a 12-7 advantage in the season series vs. Toledo with five games to play. One more Indy victory would guarantee another season series win over the Mud Hens, its eighth in 10 seasons. Since 2009, Indy's only season series loss to Toledo came in 2014 (10-11). The two IL West rivals also split 24 games down the middle in 2016.
