Louisville Bats News Release
TONIGHT'S GAME: The Bats and Clippers meet in the penultimate game of a four-game series tonight at Huntington Park, with a chance for the Bats to win their sixth series in a row. Last night, Robert Stephenson pitched 6.0 innings of one-hit ball, striking out 13 batters, a new high for Louisville pitching in 2018. Tonight, right-hander Lucas Sims makes his organizational debut after coming over to the Reds in a trade from the Atlanta Braves on July 30.
AGAINST COLUMBUS: Louisville has been great against Columbus on the road, winning their last 3 games at Huntington Park and 4 of 5 matchups this season. At Louisville Slugger Field, however, the Bats finished just 4-10 against the Clip Show. In 19 total matchups so far in 2018, LOU is 8-11 and has been outscored by a narrow 96-92 margin after last night's 4-0 win.
23 K'S IN 2 GAMES: The Bats' last 2 starting pitchers, Cody Reed (10 K's) and Robert Stephenson (team-high 13 K's), have combined to strike out 23 Columbus Clippers. The 23 punchouts break the duo's own combined high set earlier this season, when Reed and Stephenson combined to strike out 20 in their June 12-13 starts.
WHAT DOG DAYS?: Since falling to a season-worst 20 games below the .500 mark (35-55) on July 16, the Bats are 15-3 in their last 18 games. The 18-game run includes a 9-game winning streak from July 17-25, their longest win streak since the 2010 season.
GOLDEN WIN: The Bats' 50th win of the season came in shutout fashion, improving to a league-best 6-2 in shutout games this season. In 2017, the Bats won their 50th game on August 21 when they improved to 50-77. In 2016, the Bats were an even 50-50 after a win on July 22.
20TH PLAYER TO HOMER: Center fielder C.J. McElroy hit a leadoff blast in last night's 4-0 win, the third time this season LOU has hit a leafoff home run, joining Tyler Goeddel and Mason Williams . McElroy didn't just hit his first career Triple-A home run, but he also became the 20th different player to hit a home run for the Bats in 2018.
"ROADS" SCHOLAR: After a franchise-worst start on the road this season in which the Bats started off 5-19, Louisville has turned the corner, going 19-8 since June 15 over its last 27 games on the road. LOU did not win its first road series until June 15-17, taking 2 of 3 against the Toledo Mud Hens. During the Bats' current 19-8 road stretch since their first series win in mid-June, they own a 5-0-2 series record in 7 series away from Louisville Slugger Field, and can win their sixth road series in 8 tries with a win tonight or tomorrow against the Clippers.
SIX WITH A WIN TONIGHT: The Bats have won 5+ consecutive series for the first time since the 2010 season, the last time the Bats made the International League playoffs. In 2010, LOU won their first 7 series coming out of the All-Star break, taking 3 of 4 vs. Lehigh Valley (7/15-7/18), 3 of 4 at Charlotte (7/19-7/22), sweeping 3 at Gwinnett (7/23-7/25), sweeping 4 vs. Charlotte (7/27-7/30), taking 3 of 4 in a split-series against Columbus (7/31-8/4), sweeping 4 vs. Norfolk (8/5-8/8), and finally, sweeping 4 at Toledo (8/9-8/12) to start the second half that season with an immaculate 24-3 record.
