Philadelphia Union News Release
CHESTER, Pa. - Following this morning's Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Round of 16 Draw, Philadelphia Union will play the New York Red Bulls in the next round of the competition. The contest takes place at Talen Energy Stadium on Saturday, June 16 and is set to kick off at 7:00 p.m. ET. All ticketing information will be announced in the near future.
The Union were grouped in the tournament's East Region and, should they advance, will face the winner of D.C. United-Orlando City SC in the Quarterfinals. That potential Quarterfinal match would also be at Talen Energy Stadium. Philadelphia defeated the Richmond Kickers by a 5-0 scoreline in the Fourth Round of the tournament on Tuesday.
This is set to be the fifth all-time matchup between Philadelphia and New York in the Open Cup. The Union are 2-2 all-time against the Red Bulls in the Open Cup, defeating them in the 2015 Quarterfinals and in the 2016 Round of 16.
First held in 1914, the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup is the oldest cup competition for soccer in the United States and the country's oldest annual tournament for team sports. 2018 marks the 105th edition of the tournament, which saw the Union finish as runners-up in both 2014 and 2015. Last season, Philadelphia advanced to the Round of 16 of the competition.
The Union next play tomorrow, June 8 when they face defending MLS Cup champion Toronto FC at Talen Energy Stadium (8:00 p.m. ET / PHL17).
