New York Red Bulls News Release
HARRISON, N.J. - The New York Red Bulls will face the Philadelphia Union in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Round of 16 on June 16 at 7 p.m. ET at Talen Energy Stadium. New York and Philadelphia will meet in the Round of 16 for the second-straight year.
New York reached the Round of 16 with a decisive 4-0 victory over rival NYCFC at Red Bull Arena. The Red Bulls found goals from Vincent Bezecourt, Aaron Long and two from Daniel Royer with Ryan Meara pitching his fifth career Open Cup shutout. Philadelphia advanced with a 5-0 rout of the Richmond Kickers at Talen Energy Stadium. The Union had five different goal scorers in the first minutes and saw goalkeeper John McCarthy posted a shutout with one save.
It is the fourth straight year that New York and Philadelphia will clash in the Open Cup. Two of the previous three meetings have gone to penalty kicks after finishing in a 1-1 draw through 90 minutes of regulation and 30 minutes of overtime. The Union's lone 2-1 regulation win came in 2016 at Talen Energy Stadium. The Red Bulls, however, bested the Union last season, advancing 5-3 on penalty kicks.
New York will have two league matches leading up to its Round of 16 match. The Red Bulls will travel to face Columbus Crew SC on June 9 then return home to host Seattle Sounders FC on June 13.
