Philadelphia Union News Release
CHESTER, Pa. - Philadelphia Union today announced they have acquired $50,000 in General Allocation Money (GAM) from LAFC. In exchange, the Union have traded the Homegrown Player rights to goalkeeper and YSC Academy graduate Tomas Romero.
A native of Cherry Hill, NJ., 20-year-old Romero recently played for Georgetown University. He recorded 10 wins, two draws and seven shutouts in his freshman year. In 2019 he led the team to their first NCAA Soccer College Cup title by making the final save in a PK shootout, becoming the second YSC Academy graduate to win the College Cup.
Prior to committing to Georgetown, Romero played for the Union Academy and Bethlehem Steel FC/Union II. At the age of 16, he became the youngest goalkeeper to start a USL Championship match when he started in net for Steel FC's home opener in April of 2017. That same season Romero made history once again as the youngest player to win a league contest. He would go on to play a total of 17 USLC matches, earning two shutouts along the way. Romero also featured for the Union Academy's U15/16, U17/18 and U18/19 teams, playing a total of 36 games (35 starts).
Internationally, Romero has been called up to the El Salvador U17 and U23 teams, including the 2017 Concacaf U17 Championship.
TRANSACTION: Philadelphia Union receives $50,000 in General Allocation Money from LAFC in exchange for Homegrown Player rights to goalkeeper Tomas Romero.
