Timbers Select Two Players in Final Two Rounds of 2021 MLS SuperDraft

PORTLAND, Ore. - The Portland Timbers today selected two players over the final two rounds of the 2021 MLS SuperDraft presented by adidas. The Timbers selected midfielder Dawson McCartney from Dartmouth University in the second round (No. 43 overall) and forward Diego Gutierrez from Creighton University in the third round (No. 70 overall).

In a draft-day trade, Portland acquired $75,000 in 2021 General Allocation Money (GAM) and $25,000 in 2022 General Allocation Money (GAM) from Orlando City SC in exchange for the eighth overall pick in the 2021 MLS SuperDraft. On Jan. 12, 2021, the Timbers acquired the No. 8 pick overall from the LA Galaxy in exchange for defender Jorge Villafaña and Portland's natural first round pick (16th overall) in the 2021 MLS SuperDraft.

McCartney was selected by the Timbers after making 43 appearances (40 starts) and tallying eight goals and 14 assists as a three-year starter at Dartmouth University (2017-19). McCartney, who was a two-time Second Team All-Ivy selection (2018, 2019) and the 2017 Ivy League Rookie of the Year, notched three goals and four assists during his junior campaign in 2019. A product of the Philadelphia Union Academy, McCartney was tied for a team-high eight assists and contributed with two goals during his freshman year in 2017 for the Green Wave.

Before transferring to Creighton University, Gutierrez was a three-year starter at the University of Nebraska Omaha (2017-19), where he appeared in 44 matches (37 starts) for the Mavericks and tallied 10 goals and 13 assists. The Omaha, Neb., native tallied one goal and four assists in his junior campaign in 2019. During his sophomore season in 2018, Gutierrez registered seven goals and seven assists in 15 games played (15 starts) en route to earning First Team All-Summit League.
