LAFC Acquires MLS Homegrown Rights to Goalkeeper Tomas Romero

January 21, 2021 - Major League Soccer (MLS) - Los Angeles FC News Release

The Los Angeles Football Club (LAFC) announced today that the Club has traded $50,000 in General Allocation Money (GAM) to the Philadelphia Union in exchange for the MLS Homegrown rights to goalkeeper Tomas Romero.

In 2019, Romero saw action in nine regular season contests (eight starts) for Bethlehem Steel in the USL Championship. Later in the year, he would post a 9-0-3 record and register seven shutouts and 30 saves, while guiding Georgetown University to the Division I National Championship as a freshman.

In three years with Bethlehem Steel, Romero appeared in 17 contests (16 starts), registering two clean sheets. He earned USL Championship Player of the Week (Week 20) after a career-high 11-save performance during a 1-0 win over Louisville City on July 20, 2019. Romero currently holds the record for youngest goalkeeper to start and win a USL contest.

Romero, 20, made his international debut with El Salvador's U-17 side at the 2017 Bolivarian Games in Colombia, playing four matches against Colombia, Ecuador, Venezuela and Bolivia.
