Phantoms To Wear Special Jerseys on Friday January 26

January 23, 2007 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Adirondack Phantoms News Release

PHILADELPHIA - This Friday night, the Phantoms will honor one of the city's oldest hockey teams, and its first NHL entry. When the Phantoms take the ice against the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, the team will be wearing replica jerseys patterned after those of the Philadelphia Quakers, which played in the National Hockey League during the 1930-31 season. The jerseys will be auctioned off after the game, with a portion of the proceeds going to Phantoms Charities.

The Quakers were originally the Pittsburgh Pirates, a team that was part of the NHL's original period of expansion in the mid-1920s. The Pirates entered the league in 1925-26, but encountered financial troubles by the end of the 1929-30 season. A plan was hatched to move the team to Philadelphia for a season and then return it to Pittsburgh once a new arena was built.

The Quakers came on the scene at the Philadelphia Arena, located at 46th and Market, but played only one season there. In the summer of 1931, the NHL placed the team under suspension for a year in order to give its owners a chance to reorganize, but that never materialized. The franchise was officially eliminated five years later.

Hockey continued to have a place in Philadelphia even after the Quakers didn't work out. Minor league pro hockey lasted until 1964 in Philadelphia in the form of the Arrows, the Ramblers, and the Rockets - ending just three seasons before the Flyers arrived.

The Phantoms are back at the Wachovia Spectrum for a mid-week special with the rival Hershey Bears on Wednesday, Jan. 24 at 7:05 before taking on the Penguins in the special jerseys on Friday. Individual tickets for all Phantoms games, including $8 tickets for children 14 and under anywhere in the building, are on sale now at phantomshockey.com or by calling 800-298-4200.
