Tri-City Storm News Release
Youngstown, Oh. - Joe Cipollone tied the game with seven minutes left, but Youngstown Phantoms forward Jason Cotton scored the game-winning goal with 21 ticks remaining to best the Tri-City Storm, 4-2, Saturday at Covelli Centre.
After a turnover, Cotton rifled a shot to the short side and past Dayton Rasmussen, who kept Tri-City in the game with 17 saves. Cam Morrison scored into an empty net with five seconds left to ice the game.
Through the first four games of the Storm's season-long six-game road trip, Tri-City has points in three contests (2-0-1-0), keeping it second in the conference with 46 points. The regulation loss snapped the Storm's eight-game point streak on the road, the longest in the league this season.
Youngstown's Noah LaLonde scored with six minutes left in the first to open the scoring, but Nico Sturm helped the Storm respond, deflecting Mattias Goransson's power-play point shot with 3:36 remaining in the opening frame. John Marino took the secondary helper, slipping a perfect pass to Goransson.
Sturm is up to 12 goals this season, a team-best eight on the power play, while Goransson leads all USHL defensemen with 30 points.
With 13 seconds left in the first, Yushiroh Hirano sniped a shot over Rasmussen on the power play, assisted by Luke McInnis and Vas Kolias, to give the Phantoms a 2-1 edge at the end of one.
In a defensively-played second, the Storm yielded seven shots, all stopped by Rasmussen. Tri-City whipped five on Bednard's cage.
The third began with defense, but ended with a flourish. Cipollone batted a shot out of air past Ryan Bednard, who made 28 saves for the victory. The goal 7:03 left to tied the game at two. Andrew Peski earned the primary assist by driving the center lane and shooting the puck off of Bednard's blocker. Walker Duehr took the secondary helper.
The Storm takes on the Sioux Falls Stampede on the road next Friday, Feb. 12 and Saturday, Feb. 13 at 7:05 p.m, with the Viaero Wireless Pregame Show at 6:45 p.m. Tri-City is next at home on Feb. 19 against Sioux Falls for Thunderstruck Night, with a Free Kids Friday and a special thunderstick giveaway.
