Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

Sam McCormick recorded a hat trick and Ryan Lohin added two goals Saturday during a 5-2 Madison Capitols win against the Waterloo Black Hawks at Young Arena.

Waterloo outshot Madison in every period and by a final count of 44-21. However, Garrett Metcalf made 42 saves in the win, one more than during a 3-1 loss he suffered to Waterloo when the teams last met in November.

An errant shot during a Capitols power play resulted in the only goal of the first period. After the first chance had missed the net, it caromed back into the crease and was knocked across the goal line by Lohin at 6:23.

McCormick cut to the net and lifted the first of two second period goals under the crossbar at 1:16. The second from Madison's leading scorer was put in to cap a two-on-one rush while shorthanded with 2:31 remaining before intermission. In between, Waterloo converted a power play when Zach Yon stuffed the puck inside the post after it had come to him off the end glass.

Yon's goal was the result of an initial shot by Collin Saccoman, and it was Saccoman who struck next during a power play at 3:08 of the third. Coming from the right point to control a loose puck in the slot, he sent a low shot past Metcalf.

Waterloo was within a goal for exactly 60 seconds before Lohin scored on a two-on-none chance created by a turnover at the Hawk blue line. McCormick notched his third into an empty net with 55.2 seconds remaining.

Next, the Black Hawks play their first game since December in the Dupaco Cowbell Cup Series on the road Friday against the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders.
