Dubuque Fighting Saints News Release

DUBUQUE, Iowa - Two goals washed away a late lead for the home-standing Dubuque Fighting Saints, as the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders stunned the Saints in front of a sold-out crowd at the Mystique Community Ice Center. Matt Filipe's overtime winner put the visitors over the top by a final score of 5-4.

Filipe took a shot-pass from Mitch Reinke off of the pads of Hunter Miska, and he stashed the rebound at the side of the goal through Miska at the 4:42 mark of the extra session. That capped off the furious comeback from Cedar Rapids, who took two of the three games this season. All three have been decided by just one goal.

Justin Cole and Ross Colton began the momentous rally for the visitors, scoring one minute and 32 seconds apart in the final five minutes. Both resulted off of subtle deflections, and as a result, tied the game at four.

Mitchell Smith, Dallas Gerads and Gordie Green all scored in a furious second period for the Dubuque Fighting Saints, erasing an early deficit put forth by the RoughRiders shorthanded. Green tied the game off of a nifty feed from Brett Boeing midway through regulation time. That goal ended an extended drought for the Michigan native.

Gerads followed up Green's goal just over a minute later off of the pass from the new guy, Cole Guttman, who tallied his first USHL point off of a two-on-one break. Gerads picked up his tenth goal of the season, and his fourth in the last two games.

The elder Smith twin, while diving shorthanded, tallied a tremendous goal with 25 seconds remaining in the second period to cap the scoring for the Saints. He bulled his way through the Cedar Rapids defense, and fired a shot through RoughRiders goaltender Ben Blacker's pads.

New Cedar Rapids acquisition Karch Bachman found a way to score early in the second period after the game was all square following the first 20 minutes. His first as a RoughRider came on a shelf shot on the backhand.

Filipe started the scoring for Cedar Rapids on the power play, connecting on a rebound opportunity. Smith responded on a power play opportunity as well, knotting the game up at one.

Miska denied 30 RoughRider shots. Blacker stopped 40.

As a result of the point distribution, the Saints remain tied with for second place the Green Bay Gamblers at 51 points. Cedar Rapids advances to 57 points on the season.

The Fighting Saints remain home as part of a home-heavy schedule in the month of February. The Muskegon Lumberjacks come to town on Friday, February 12 as part of a two-game set with the Eastern Conference foe. Friday is our celebration of the 20th anniversary of the hit film, Happy Gilmore. For tickets, call the box office at 563.583.6880, or online at DubuqueFightingSaints.com.
