Muskegon Lumberjacks News Release
MUSKEGON, MI (February 6th) - The Muskegon Lumberjacks split their weekend series with the Bloomington Thunder, after falling tonight 3-2.
The Thunder controlled most of the play in the first period, and took an early 1-0 lead, three minutes into the game. Muskegon turned the puck over trying to break out of the zone, and Tarek Baker took advantage, scoring his 7th goal against the Lumberjacks this season.
Bloomington had another chance to increase their lead, but Lumberjacks goaltender Joey Daccord made a number of big saves on a 5-on-3 penalty kill. Muskegon ended the first period with a power play opportunity, but could not get anything past Logan Halladay, and went into the first intermission trailing Bloomington 1-0.
The Thunder controlled the first half of the second period, but Daccord was able to fight off a couple more opportunities. Midway through the second period, Muskegon began to create scoring chances before breaking through the tie the game at one. Grant Gabriele scored his first goal in a Muskegon Lumberjacks uniform with a slap shot from the high slot. Matej Paulovic notched the primary assist, while Anthony Del Gaizo registered his first career USHL point with the second assist.
The Lumberjacks took a 2-1 lead five minutes later when the USHL leading scorer, Rem Pitlick wristed a shot through the glove of Halladay. Pitlick received the puck, after Paulovic won an offensive zone face to the top of the circle. Muskegon would take the 2-1 lead into the locker room after forty minutes of play.
The Thunder were able to level the game early in the third period, when Bloomington's captain Jake Slaker bashed in a rebound for a power play goal. Bloomington's forward Logan Lambdin gave the Thunder a 3-2 edge with under two minutes to go in the game, after a wrist shot from the top of the circle.
Muskegon pulled goaltender Daccord, but was unable to breakthrough, and fell to the Thunder 3-2. The Lumberjacks now leads the season series against Bloomington with three wins in five games. They will meet for the final time this season Bloomington, nine days from now, as it will complete the Muskegon Lumberjacks four game road trip where they will match up with the Madison Capitols and Dubuque Fighting Saints as well.
The Muskegon Lumberjacks (15-17-4) next game will be Wednesday, in Wisconsin, against the Madison Capitols (15-20-4). The next Lumberjacks home game will be on February 19th, when the Lumberjacks host the Capitols for a pair of weekend games.
