GLENS FALLS, N.Y. - Goals by rookies Dana Tyrell and Mitch Fadden would not be enough as the Norfolk Admirals (31-26-3-1) fell to the Adirondack Phantoms (27-28-2-2) 3-2 on Friday night at the Glens Falls Civic Center.

The Admirals saw their four-game winning streak snapped and fell to third place in the AHL's East Division after the second-place Albany River Rats defeated the Portland Pirates tonight. Norfolk will continue a five-game road trip tomorrow night against the Binghamton Senators.

The Phantoms took a 1-0 lead with a power play goal just 3:03 into the first period. Mike Pyorala sent a feed from the right circle to David Laliberte in the slot. Laliberte sent a quick shot that Norfolk netminder Dustin Tokarski kicked back into the left circle. However, Laliberte found his own rebound and shot it over Tokarski's right leg and into the net.

The Admirals tied it up at 1-1 just over four minutes later off a faceoff in the left circle. Vladimir Mihalik teed up a slap shot that Phantoms goaltender Johan Backlund blocked. However, the rebound ended up on the stick of rookie forward Dana Tyrell, who chipped a shot over the shoulder of Backlund and into the net at 7:38 for his fourth goal of the season.

Adirondack took a 2-1 lead 4:37 into the second stanza. Jonathon Kalinski stole a puck behind the Norfolk goal line and centered a pass into the slot. Former Admiral Jason Ward collected the pass between the hashmarks and fired a shot past Tokarski and into the net.

Norfolk had a good opportunity to tie the game at 2-2 midway through the second stanza with a five-minute power play. David Clackson was given a five-minute major penalty for kneeing Admirals forward Mark Parrish at 8:06. However, the Admirals were unable to capitalize despite good pressure by the Admirals throughout the man advantage.

Just over a minute after the Clackson penalty expired, Adirondack took a two-goal lead with a five-on-three power play opportunity. Jason Ward sent a pass from the top of the left circle to Jon Matsumoto at the right faceoff dot for a one-timer past a diving Tokarski at 14:17.

Norfolk cut its disadvantage to one goal midway through the final frame with a four-on-three power play goal. Ty Wishart attempted a shot from the right point that was partially blocked. The puck trickled to the bottom of the right circle where Mitch Fadden swept it into the net past Backlund at 12:58 for his fifth goal of the season.

The Admirals kept pressure on the Phantoms throughout the final frame, out-shooting them 14-7. However, they were unable to find the equalizer and fell 3-2.

Dustin Tokarski (21 shots, 18 saves) took the loss. Johan Backlund (38 shots, 36 saves) earned the win.

Norfolk was 1-4 on the power play. Adirondack was 2-7.

The Admirals will continue a five-game road trip with game three tomorrow night against the Binghamton Senators.

The Admirals will return to Scope on Friday and Saturday, March 5 and 6, for a pair of pivotal East Division matchups against the Albany River Rats.
