Bridgeport Islanders News Release
GLENS FALLS, NY -- Jonathan Kalinski scored the game-winning goal in the shootout and Krys Kolanos had a goal and an assist as the Adirondack Phantoms posted a 3-2 shootout victory over the Bridgeport Sound Tigers Wednesday night at the Glens Falls Civic Center. Jesse Joensuu had a goal and an assist for the Sound Tigers who fell to 21-18-1-2 on the season.
In a scoreless first period, Bridgeport's best scoring chance came midway through the stanza when Trevor Smith stole a clearing attempt at the face-off circle and tried to stuff the puck through John Grahame's legs. However, the goaltender stacked his pads and stopped the shot.
Midway through the second period, Matt Martin received a major penalty for boarding. During that penalty kill, Greg Moore was called for slashing, resulting in a 5-on-3 power-play for the Phantoms. On the ensuing two-man advantage, Kolanos rang a shot off the goalpost. The rebound came around to Joonas Lehtivuori who blasted a shot from the blue-line past Nathan Lawson to give the Phantoms a 1-0 lead with 6:35 left in the second period.
Less than two minutes after the Phantoms grabbed the lead, the Sound Tigers tied the game with a power-play goal of their own. With 4:47 left in the second, Joensuu attempted to send a centering pass out from behind the net. However, the puck bounced off a Phantom defenseman and trickled past Grahame and into the net. It was Joensuu's eighth goal of the year and extended his point streak to eight straight games.
Greg Mauldin gave the Sound Tigers the lead 3:54 into the third period. With Bridgeport on the power-play, Mark Flood ripped a shot on goal from the blue-line. Grahame made the initial save but a charging Mauldin slammed the rebound inside the left post for his team leading 13th goal of the season.
Kolanos tied the game for the Phantoms with 2:13 left in regulation. After Lawson made a save on an initial blast by David Laliberte, Kolanos was in the middle of a scrum for the rebound and pushed the puck into the net for his seventh goal of the year.
Bridgeport had the best scoring chance during the overtime, as Grahame made a big pad save on a breakaway by Mark Katic midway through the session.
After a scoreless first round in the shootout, Andreas Nodl put the Phantoms on the board first, snapping a shot high over Lawson's glove to start round two. Martin evened the score in the fourth round, beating Grahame with a low shot.
Kolanos put the Phantoms back ahead in the fourth round, faking a low shot and then lifting the puck into the top of the net. Robin Figren extended the shootout by converting on his own deke move in the fifth round.
Kaliniski scored the eventual game-winner in the seventh round of the shootout, slipping the puck through Lawson's legs. Justin DiBenedetto's attempt to extend the game once more rang off the goalpost.
The Phantoms outshot the Sound Tigers 37-25. Lawson had 34 saves for Bridgeport while Grahame stopped 23 shots for the Phantoms.
The Sound Tigers are back in action Friday night when they return home to host the Providence Bruins. Face-off at Harbor Yard is set for 7:00 pm. Bridgeport will also be on home ice Sunday afternoon as the Sound Tigers host the Worcester Sharks in a special 1:00 pm face-off at Harbor Yard.
