(Reading, PA) - Jonathan Pettibone came within one out of a complete-game shutout, while Darin Ruf homered and drove in four as the Reading Phillies defeated the Trenton Thunder, 5-1, Wednesday morning at FirstEnergy Stadium. Pettibone (2-3) allowed a two-out ninth-inning home run to Melky Mesa that prevented the shutout.

Ruf, who came in second in the league in batting average, hit a two-run home run against Shaeffer Hall (2-4) in the first inning to put Reading ahead 2-0. Ruf struck again in the third with a two-run single off of Hall to make the score 4-0. In the brief two-game series, Ruf went 5-for-7 with two home runs and five RBI.

Pettibone was pulled after Mesa's home run and went 8.2 innings, allowing five hits and two walks while striking out five. Hall worked seven sharp innings, allowing five runs (only three earned) on five hits with three strikeouts.

Trenton next returns home for a four-game series against Portland, beginning with game one Thursday night at 7:05 pm at Waterfront Park.
