Binghamton Rumble Ponies News Release
BINGHAMTON, NY - Jefry Marte's fielding error in the eighth inning set the table for a four-run inning as the New Britain Rock Cats completed a two-game series sweep by handing the Binghamton Mets a 5-1 loss on Wednesday night at NYSEG Stadium.
With the game tied at one, Marte booted Joe Benson's ground ball to third to start the eighth. The Rock Cats tagged reliever Erik Turgeon for four hits, including three doubles, and scored four unearned runs to take the lead for good.
For the second straight game, the B-Mets grabbed the lead first. In the second, Binghamton collected three consecutive singles against starter Steve Hirschfeld to get on the board. Marte and Raul Reyes started the rally with hits and Juan Lagares gave Binghamton a 1-0 lead with a single to right. It would prove to be Binghamton's only score of the game.
The disastrous eighth inning overshadowed another strong pitching performance from B-Mets starter Collin McHugh. The right-hander allowed one run on six hits over seven innings. He walked two and struck out four. His only blemish was a Wilkin Ramirez solo home run in the seventh.
Turgeon (1-3) took over for McHugh in the eighth when things came unglued. Deibinson Romero and Danny Lehmann supplied RBI doubles and James Beresford supplied a run-scoring single. All four runs were unearned.
After getting on the board in the second, the B-Mets offense went quietly to the finish line. Hirschfeld posted four scoreless frames to close out his six innings of work. Luis Perdomo (3-2) earned the win with a scoreless seventh and Caleb Thielbar closed the door with two shutout frames. Binghamton had just three hits after the third inning.
The B-Mets (14-17) head to Manchester to start a four-game series against the New Hampshire Fisher Cats Thursday night at 6:35 PM. The Horizons Federal Credit Union pre-game show begins at 6:20 PM on Newsradio 1290 WNBF.
