Altoona Curve News Release
BOWIE, Md. - One swing from Bowie Baysox catcher Carlos Perez wiped out a no-hit bid for Altoona Curve pitcher Cam Vieaux in the sixth inning on Saturday at Prince George's Stadium as Bowie defeated Altoona, 3-2.
Vieaux (Loss, 3-4) fired 5.2 innings without a hit allowed before the sixth inning was extended by back-to-back walks to Ryan McKenna and Anderson Feliz. On an 0-2 pitch, Perez lifted a three-run homer to deep left and erased the no-hitter, the shutout and a 2-0 Curve (65-66, 29-34) lead.
Altoona built their lead against Baysox (72-59, 41-22) starter Michael Baumann (Win, 5-2), starting with a solo homer by Oneil Cruz in the fourth inning. It was the first Double-A home run for the Pirates third-rated prospect. Cruz doubled to left after Jared Oliva hit an infield single in the sixth, but an error in left field by Cedric Mullins allowed Oliva to score all the way from first.
Baumann was charged with two runs, one earned, over six innings but earned his third win in a row as a result of the go-ahead homer by Perez.
Steve Klimek and Cristian Alvarado combined for three perfect innings out of the Baysox bullpen.
Vieaux finished six innings and allowed one hit. He walked two hitters in the first inning and went on to retire 15 straight until consecutive walks in the sixth. Altoona's left-hander pitched 20.1 straight scoreless innings at Double-A, dating back to May 22, and 24.1 innings overall between Altoona and Triple-A Indianapolis.
Nick Mears pitched two scoreless innings behind Vieaux but worked around two runners, a double by Mullins and one walk during the eighth.
Cruz finished 2-for-4 while Oliva went 1-for-4. Adrian Valerio accounted for the only other hit for Altoona when he tripled in the third inning.
The series in Bowie wraps up Sunday afternoon at 1:35 p.m. with right-hander Beau Sulser (8-1, 2.48) making the start for the Curve against Baysox righty Tyler Herb (3-2, 4.75).
The Curve head home on Monday to play the final home series of the 2019 season.
