Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - A seven-run rally during the ninth inning lifted the Peoria Chiefs to an 11-2 victory Thursday against the Cedar Rapids Kernels at Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium. Cedar Rapids still owns a 2-1 series lead over Peoria with three games left in this season-opening homestand.

Peoria held a 4-2 edge before its outburst in the final frame. Alec Burleson's RBI single was followed by a two-run double for Pedro Pages. A single coupled with an error allowed to Pages to score a run of his own. Chandler Redmond added a three-run home run. Gabe Snyder and Yeltsin Encarnacion pitched to Peoria that inning with Cedar Rapids running low on relief options.

Jair Camargo led the late Kernels comeback effort prior to the tough finish. After Matt Wallner's leadoff triple in the sixth, Camargo delivered an RBI groundout. He also hit an RBI single within the eighth that plated Spencer Steer and trimmed the deficit to 4-2.

Before the Chiefs opened the scoring with single tallies in the third through fifth innings, Michael Helman made a great play for the Kernels that kept the game scoreless in the second. Helman, who was making his second professional appearance in left field, threw out Brendan Donovan at home plate when he tried to score on a single from Redmond.

Also noteworthy for Cedar Rapids in the contest was the return to game action for reliever Zach Featherstone. In his first official outing in nearly three years, he induced a double play to escape a seventh-inning jam and later posted a scoreless eighth inning to cap his night.

Chiefs right-hander Michael Brettell (1-0) yielded just two runs in 3.1 innings pitched was credited as the winning pitcher. Ian Oxnevad limited the Kernels in the eighth and ninth while picking up the save. Kernels right-hander Blayne Enlow (0-1) took the loss despite notching a game-high six strikeouts in his season debut.

Up next, southpaw Tyler Watson and the Kernels will square off with right-hander Michael YaSenka and the Chiefs at 6:35 p.m. Friday at Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium. Chris Kleinhans-Schulz will have the call on www.kernels.com and MiLB.TV.
