Norfolk Tides News Release

Hayden Penn tossed six solid innings, helping the Tides edge first place Durham 2-1 in game one of a doubleheader Monday. The Bulls knocked off the Tides 8-3 in game two.

Penn (2-0) allowed one run on seven hits in his Harbor Park debut, striking out five without walking a batter. He surrendered just a two-out RBI single to Jason Pridie in the third inning, helping the Tides win their fourth straight game over the Bulls. The 22-year-old right-hander threw 90 pitches in the contest, 59 of which were strikes.

After Penn's strong outing, the Bulls nearly tied the score against Tides reliever Jim Miller in the 7th inning. Miller issued three walks to load the bases with one out, and fell behind 3-0 on pinch-hitter Chris Richard. Miller then battled back to strike out Richard, and he followed by striking out Jason Pridie on a called strike three to end the contest and pick up his third save of the season.

Norfolk plated both runs of the contest in the first inning off of Durham starter J.P. Howell (6-8). Sebastien Boucher and Brandon Fahey clubbed back-to-back singles to start the frame, and Mike Cervenak drew a walk to load the bases. Terry Tiffee was then hit by a pitch, bringing Boucher into score, and Fahey came in to score one batter later on a double play ball off the bat of Jason Dubois.

In game two, the Bulls used a big night from catcher Raul Casanova to knock off the Tides 8-3.

Casanova hit a bases loaded double in the third inning, singled home a run in the fifth, and hit a solo homer in the seventh frame as he finished 3-for-4 with five runs batted in. The solo homer came off of Tides position player Terry Tiffee, who allowed just the one run in a scoreless inning of relief.

Mike Cervenak led Norfolk's offense with two hits and an RBI, while Brandon Fahey added an RBI single.

Andy Mitchell fell to 8-7 with the loss, as the right-hander allowed four runs on five hits in four innings of work.

Jeff Niemann (12-5) moved into a tie for the International League lead with his 12th win of the season. The right-hander struck out six without walking a batter.

Norfolk and Durham finish up their five-game set on Tuesday night, with first pitch from Harbor Park slated for 7:15. Tim Kester (9-8, 5.02) will take the hill for Norfolk against former Tide Jae Seo (7-3, 3.64).
