Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees News Release

The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre baseball franchise will see a fifteen year-old attendance record fall tonight vs. Ottawa and see a big leaguer make a rehab appearance.

In 1992, the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Red Barons attracted a record 560,454 fans but entering tonight the Yankees have drawn 560,288 fans, just 166 short of the record.

For one lucky fan, the night will be extra special. One fan will be selected at random and receive some cool gifts during the bottom of the first inning on top of the home dugout.

He or she will receive a three day/two night stay for two adults in the Champagne Tower at one of the four Caesars Pocono Resorts, dinner for four and four tickets to see The Last Comic Standing live at Caesars Cove Haven, a signed Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees team ball and an assortment of Yankees merchandise.

Also tonight, New York Yankees first baseman Doug Mientkiewicz will join the team on a Major League Rehab assignment.

Mientkiewicz has been on the DL since June 4 with a fractured right wrist. He suffered the injury in a game June 2 vs. Boston in the bottom of the seventh after collision with Mike Lowell at first base while trying to catch a throw from Derek Jeter. Tests at Mass. General Hospital revealed a mild concussion, cervical sprain and fractured scaphoid bone in his right wrist. He had surgery to repair the wrist on June 12 at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center.

Prior to the injury, he batted .226 with 4 HR and 16 RBI in 50 games. He began his official rehab assignment on August 21 with the Tampa Yankees and played in five games hitting a robust .429 (6-14) with 0 HR and 8 RBI.

In his 10-year big league career, he has played for Minnesota (1998-2004), Boston (2004), Mets (2005), Kansas City (2006) and the Yankees (2007. He is a career .270 hitter with 63 HR and 364 RBI.
