Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins News Release
WILKES-BARRE, Pa. - Jason Williams tallied a goal and chipped in two assists to lead the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins to a 4-3 shootout win over the Rochester Americans on Friday at the Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza. The victory lifted the Penguins to a record of 19-11-1-1 and extended their winning streak against the Americans to seven games.
Leading 2-1 going in the third, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton saw the opposition knot the score just 72 seconds into period as an odd-man rush culminated in Derek Whitmore knocking the puck past the pad of Brad Thiessen.
Rochester then took a 3-2 edge at 11:44 while shorthanded when Igor Gongalsky stripped Thiessen of the puck in the far corner and fed Maxime Legault all alone in front for the go-ahead marker.
The Penguins rallied on the back of a two-man advantage with less than seven minutes to go in the game. Jason Williams' chance from the high slot was held up by goalie Drew MacIntyre, but Eric Tangradi was able to nudge the bouncing puck across the goal line for his 14th of the season.
In the shootout, Geoff Walker and Bryan Lerg allowed Wilkes-Barre/Scranton to quickly establish a 2-0 lead after two rounds, but Paul Szczechura and Jonathan Parker would answer on their ensuing chances to even things up after four rounds. Those would be the last goals until the Tangradi put a shot top corner in round eight for decisive marker.
Thiessen stopped Mark Voakes to record the win, while also making 27 saves through overtime for his 12th win of the season.
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton trailed 1-0 until the 11:07 mark of the second period when Williams whistled a wrist shot from the near circle under the blocker of MacIntyre for his fourth goal of the season.
Alex Grant made it 2-1 and gathered his first goal of the year with a point shot that bounced inside the right post on the power play.
It's Breast Cancer Awareness Night on Saturday, January 7 when the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins skate against the Syracuse Crunch at 7:05pm.
