Penguins Assign Hartzell to Wheeling

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. - It was announced today that the Pittsburgh Penguins have assigned goaltender Eric Hartzell from the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins to the Wheeling Nailers of the ECHL.

Hartzell, 23, originally signed with Pittsburgh in April after completing four seasons with Quinnipiac University. He was assigned to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton on Sept. 20 and appeared in three preseason games for the Penguins.

The 6-foot-4, 187-pound netminder was named USA Hockey College Player of the Year for 2013 helped the Bobcats reach the NCAA championship game after leading Quinnipiac to the school's first-ever Frozen Four appearance this past spring at CONSOL Energy Center.

The native of White Bear, Minnesota, was a finalist for the Hobey Baker Award as the NCAA's top college hockey player last season after posting a 30-7-5 record, 1.57 goals-against average and .933 save percentage in 42 starts.

Hartzell also earned honors as 2013 ECAC Player of the Year and ECAC Hockey Ken Dryden Goaltender of the Year and was named to the ECAC First-Team All-Star squad, the All-New England All-Star team and CollegeHockeyNews.com's First-Team.

In four seasons at Quinnipiac, Hartzell posted a career record of 58-27-17 with a 1.96 goals-against average, .924 save percentage and 10 shutouts in 106 career appearances. Hartzell's 1.96 goals-against average established a school record.

The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins are back on the ice this Friday, Nov. 1 at 7:05 p.m. when they battle the Hershey Bears at Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza.
