Sound Tigers Fall to Wolfpack, 5-3

HARTFORD, Conn. (Oct. 30, 2013) - The Bridgeport Sound Tigers battled back against the Hartford Wolfpack Wednesday night, but eventually fell by a final score of 5-3. Aaron Ness notched his first goal of the season, while Scott Mayfield and Mike Halmo each scored 20 seconds apart after the Wolfpack scored three consecutive goals in the second period. Danny Kristo had a three-point night to lead the way for the Wolfpack.

"I did think there were some positives to take out of the game," Sound Tigers head coach Scott Pellerin said. "The effort was there a lot of the time even though we didn't come away with any points."

Ness got the Sound Tigers on the board with a power-play goal at 13:15 of the first period. After Ryan Strome tried to get the puck out in front from the left-circle, the puck deflected off a Wolfpack defenseman and into the high slot. Ness was waiting right there to fire a wrist shot, which got through a screen and past Wolfpack goaltender Jason Missiaen to give the Sound Tigers a 1-0 lead.

Just a couple of minutes later, the Wolfpack looked to answer as Andrew Yogan came into the zone on a breakaway. Mayfield made a valiant diving effort to stop the second-year defenseman but Yogan was awarded a penalty shot. The Sound Tigers dodged the bullet, however, as Yogan came in right down the middle but had the puck slip off his stick as he shot. The Sound Tigers ended the period with a 1-0 lead.

The Wolfpack came back in the second period with three straight goals in a span of less than nine minutes to take a 3-1 lead. First, former Sound Tiger Micheal Haley took a feed from Kyle Jean and sent a one-timer past Reiter to tie the score. Less than three minutes later, a Wolfpack power play led to a Conor Allen goal as his one-timer from the left circle beat Reiter. Finally, the Sound Tigers power play gave up a goal on which Reiter had no chance. Aaron Johnson sent the puck the length of the ice on a clear, but it hit a stanchion and kicked right back out in front. Reiter had gone behind the net to play the puck and was unable to recover before Marek Hrivik scored his second goal of the season.

The Sound Tigers recovered later in the period, however, and scored two goals in a 20-second span to tie the score. First, Anders Lee sent the puck back to the right point for Scott Mayfield, whose wrister snuck past Missiaen and made it a one-goal game. The line of Strome, Lee, and Halmo stayed on the ice and scored on the ensuing faceoff, as Lee's shot produced a big rebound which Halmo was able to power home at 14:50 of the second.

"We scored what we like to call, 'habit goals'," Pellerin said. "Guys getting out in front of the net and making it difficult for goaltenders. I thought that was a good thing."

The teams took the ice in the third period with the score still knotted at three, but the Sound Tigers did not score again. Instead, an Oscar Lindberg goal made it 4-3 at the 8:04 mark. Exactly seven minutes later, Danny Kristo, who already had two assists on the game, took a wrist shot from the circle that got past Reiter and made it a two-goal game.

Both teams went 1-for-4 on the power play in the contest while Hartford outshot the Sound Tigers, 30-21. With the loss, the Sound Tigers drop their fifth straight and fall to 1-5-1-0 on the season.

The Sound Tigers will finish their three-game road trip against the Worcester Sharks Friday night before returning to Webster Bank Arena to faceoff against the Norfolk Admirals Saturday night at 7:00.
