Pelicans Game Notes

September 1, 2011 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

- LHP Miguel De Los Santos (6-3, 3.59) at RHP Michael Mariot (8-4, 3.28) -

ACCOLADES AND AWARDS: The Carolina League announced its year-end All-Star team and superlative accolades Thursday, and four Pelicans made the cut. Former Myrtle Beach left-hander Robbie Ross was named the circuit's Pitcher of the Year after an outstanding 2011 at the Class A Advanced Level in which he posted a 9-4 record and a 2.26 ERA while striking out 98 batters and walking just 28 through 123.1 innings pitched. Ross, who was also named the circuit's starting pitcher on the postseason All-Star squad still leads league qualifiers in ERA (2.26), batting average against, and winning percentage (.692) and ranks second in WHIP (1.05). Third baseman Mike Olt and outfielders Jared Prince and Ryan Strausborger made the squad as well with Prince being named as the Carolina League's fourth outfielder. Ross, Olt, and Strausborger were all voted to the Carolina League All-Star team in June (though Olt couldn't participate in this year's All-Star Game in Modesto due to his broken collarbone).

WHO'S IT GONNA BE': The Pelicans have known since mid-June that they'd be headed to the 2011 best-of-five Southern Division Championship Series beginning at BB&T Coastal Field on Wednesday, September 7 and Thursday, September 8. What the Birds don't know is who they'll be playing when the postseason opens. Winston-Salem, a club that put postseason tickets on sale two days ago, slipped back into a virtual first-place tie with the Kinston Indians Wednesday. The Dash took a 7-1 lead over the Salem Red Sox to the third inning at BB&T Ballpark and then proceeded to surrender 12 unanswered runs in an eventual 16-10 loss. Kinston, on the other hand, won its second straight to move percentage points ahead of the Dash with a 1-0 win over the Frederick Keys Wednesday night at Grainger Stadium. With the loss, Winston-Salem kept Myrtle Beach technically alive in the pursuit of a repeat division title. The Pelicans' magic number to division crown elimination remains at one meaning any win by Winston-Salem or Kinston or loss by Myrtle Beach would eliminate the Pelicans from that chase.

10-10-3...2...1...: The Carolina League's first round series will be evenly matched no matter who comes out of the Southern Division to face the Pelicans in the Southern Division Championship Series. In the Northern Division, the first round is set. The Potomac Nationals are still in the hunt for a division title but have regardless earned their place to travel to Frederick and take on the first half division-champion (and second half division-leading) Keys for the Northern Division Championship Series. Potomac eliminated Lynchburg from playoff contention Wednesday. In their 20-game season series, the Keys and Nationals split 20 games down the middle. The Pelicans, astoundingly, did the same against both Kinston and Winston-Salem.
