Rocks Let Lead Slip Away Again
September 1, 2011 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Wilmington Blue Rocks News Release
Wilmington, DE - It was a difficult dissent for the Wilmington Blue Rocks on Thursday night at Frawley Stadium.
The Rocks watched a 4-0 lead evaporate in the sixth inning and then saw a pair of two-out walks doom them in the ninth.
Five consecutive Myrtle Beach Pelicans reached base with two down in the final frame as they plated a pair to hand Wilmington a 6-4 setback.
Dusty Odenbach took the loss for the Blue Crew.
The reliever seemed to be cruising along as he started the ninth by retiring the first two batters he faced.
It quickly fell apart however when the right-hander issued consecutive free passes.
Jared Prince followed with an RBI single to left-center that put the Pelicans ahead to stay.
Another Odenbach (2-3) walk loaded the bases, which set up Chris McGuiness' run-scoring single to left that gave Myrtle Beach some insurance.
It was a dramatic shift from where the game was as the sixth inning began.
Michael Mariot
took the hill for Wilmington with a 4-0 advantage, but the Carolina League All-Star saw it all disappear.
Leury Garcia got things started with a single and then moved into scoring position when Mariot walked Mike Olt.
Prince put the Pelicans on the board with his RBI single up the middle.
After Vinny DiFazio flied out to left, McGuiness picked him up by sending a 1-1 pitch soaring over the right-field fence.
The three-run bomb pulled Myrtle Beach even.
The four-run frame erased the earlier work done by Wilmington's offense.
The Rocks raced out to their advantage thanks to an RBI single by Carlo Testa, a two-run double off the bat of Ryan Stovall
and a steal of home by second baseman Whit Merrifield
Odenbach's struggles in the ninth allowed Trevor Hurley to get the win.
Hurley (2-4) struck out three over three perfect innings pitched.
The Rocks begin their final series of the 2011 season on Saturday at 6:05 p.m. against the Frederick Keys. Neither team has announced its rotation for the series-opener.
Broadcast coverage begins at 5:35 p.m. as studio host Adam Dobrowolski brings fans the Rocks Report Pre-game Show, presented by Wawa, on 89.7 WGLS-FM and online at wgls.rowan.edu.
