Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

LHP Nathan Moreau (7-3, 3.22) at RHP Joe Wieland (5-3, 2.08)

ABOUT LAST NIGHT...: The Pelicans needed a win badly after a rough 2-4 road trip and got it on Thursday in front of a big crowd of 4,536. Ryan Strausborger homered in a three-hit night as the Birds rocked the Northern Division champion Frederick Keys 11-1. Wilfredo Boscan shut down the Keys through seven strong innings of one-run ball. Leury Garcia and David Paisano both notched three hits as part of a Myrtle Beach attack that posted double-digit runs for the first time since their 20-6 drubbing of Potomac on May 3. The Birds handed the top team in the Carolina League their largest blowout loss of the season.

DOWN TO THE WIRE: With their big win last night, Pelicans stayed one and one-half games ahead of the Kinsston Indians in the Southern Division with three games to play in the first half. They can clinch the first-half title with a win tonight and a K-Tribe loss in Lynchburg.

HAVE THE KEYS UNLOCKED WIELAND': Joe Wieland has dominated Carolina League hitters this season, but has struggled against the Keys. He has a 5.82 ERA in three starts against Frederick (11 R/17 IP) and against all other teams it's just 1.03 (7 R/61 IP).

LIVE THE LIFE OF A 'BOS' PLAYER: Wilfredo Boscan pitched his best game of the season last night, scattering seven hits in seven innings, holding the hot Keys' offense to only one run. It was his second straight win over an All-Star ace. He beat Frederick's Bobby Bundy last night and he outdueled Kinston's Drew Pomeranz on Saturday. Earlier this season the Maracaibo, Venezuela native has outpitched Bundy and Wilmington All-Star Jake Odorizzi as ell.

ACE OF BASE: With three hits in the Frederick opener last night, Ryan Strausborger extended his hitting streak to 16 consecutive games, the longest run in the Carolina League this season. Ian Gac of Winston-Salem and Salem's Peter Hissey both had 14-game stretches in April. The All-Star also extended his on-base streak to 28 games. That run began May 19 in Winston-Salem and is the longest streak in the circuit this season, surpassing the 25-gamer run up by Tyler Holt of Kinston in May. During his hitting streak, which began on June 1 in Frederick, the former Indiana State Sycamore is batting .371 (26-70).

DON'T FORGET VINNY: Ryan Strausborger has been grabbing headlines for his season-long on-base streak, but Vinny DiFazio has reached in his last 16 games. Despite a .220 batting average during his run that started May 4, the catcher has a .400 on base percentage.
