Lynchburg Hillcats News Release
KINSTON INDIANS (36-30) vs LYNCHBURG HILLCATS (29-38)
June 17th, 2011 -- 7:05 PM
Calvin Falwell Field at Lynchburg City Stadium
RHP Brett Brach (4-4, 3.06) vs RHP Zeke Spruill (4-7, 3.73)
THE HILLCATS: Thursday, the Hillcats lost to the Kinston Indians 2-1 in extra innings...LHP Drew Pomeranz (Kinston) and RHP Aaron Shafer (Lynchburg) matched each other through seven innings, both allowing one run and striking out seven...Phil Gosselin broke up Pomeranz' no-hitter in the fourth and scored to tie the game at 1-1...A sacrifice fly in the top of the 10th put the Indians up 2-1...Preston Guilmet sat down the 'Cats in order in the bottom of the 10th for his 16th save of the year...The Hillcats sit in third place in the Carolina League Northern Division, 12.0 games back of the first place Frederick Keys...
VS. KINSTON: The Hillcats are 2-6 against the Indians this season...Both wins for the Hillcats have been shutouts...Despite the losing record, the 'Cats have outscored Kinston 28-21...Lynchburg took the 2010 season series 14-6...However, the Hillcats have switched affiliations since last season...The Myrtle Beach Pelicans (2010 Braves Advance-A affiliate) lost the season series 8-12 against the Indians a season ago...
SPOILER ALERT: Lynchburg was officially eliminated from the Northern Division first half pennant race last Friday in Frederick...The Wilmington Blue Rocks were eliminated from the same divisional race after losing to the Hillcats Monday night at City Stadium...Now the Hillcats have a chance to play a role in another team's rise or fall...The Kinston Indian elimination number is down to two with three games to play...Kinston trails the Myrtle Beach Pelicans by 1.5 games with just three to play in the first half...A Pelicans win and an Indians loss tonight would dash Kinston's hope of a first place finish...
MANAGING THE NINTH: With the game in their grasp, the Hillcats faltered last night...Phil Gosselin led off the bottom of the ninth with the score tied 1-1 with a double to left field...With Adam Milligan at the plate Gosselin read ball in dirt before the ball reached home plate and took third of the wild pitch...The game winning run stood 90 feet away with nobody out...Milligan grounded out to second base with the infield in and Gosselin remained at third...Kinston pitcher Chris Jones was then instructed to intentionally walk Joey Terdoslavich and Joe Leonard to load the bases with one out for Barrett Kleinknecht...The strategy worked as Kleinknecht grounded into the inning ending 6-4-3 double play and the game went to extras...The Indians went on to win in the 10th...
BEST OF THE BRAVOS: Seven members of the Hillcats are ranked amongst the top 30 prospects in the Braves organization according to Baseball America...That list includes SS Andrelton Simmons (15), RHP David Hale (17), RHP Dimasther Delgado (18), OF Todd Cunningham (20), OF Adam Milligan (22), INF Joe Leonard (23) and 2B Phil Gosselin (25)...
ALL-STAR REVISION: OF Adam Milligan has been named to the Carolina League All-Star team to replace injured teammate Todd Cunningham as a reserve outfielder...Milligan, who had a rather slow start to the season, hitting just .224 and driving in just 10 runs through his first 23 games before hitting the DL with a hamstring injury May 10...Since returning May 17, he has hit .312 (34-for-109) through 30 games, raising his batting average 49 points to .273...He's also driven in 25 runs in that span, giving him 35 on the season, good for the team-high...Five home runs on either side of the injury have him at 10 this year, tied for third in the league...Plate discipline may be partly responsible for the offensive surge, as Milligan has drawn 13 walks post-injury, after taking just two free passes prior...
DON'T TEST ME: OF Keenan Wiley and SS Andrelton Simmons combined last night to throw out two Indians base runners at home plate...In both scenarios, Kinston had a runner at first with two outs...Justin Toole was the first victim in the top of the second...C Shawn McGill played a big role as the throw did not beat Toole to the plate but McGill's left foot stopped Toole in his tracks blocking home and Toole was out...De ja vu in the eighth with the score tied 1-1, the trio struck again, Wiley to Simmons to McGill, nailing Anthony Gallas at home, saving the game for the moment...
TOUGH BREAK: C Braeden Schlehuber hit the disabled list again last Friday...While attempting to put down a sacrifice bunt in the seventh inning Thursday night, his right middle finger was struck by the pitch...The ball split open the tip of his finger so bad that he would have to exit the game and require stitches...C Shawn McGill ran in from the bullpen to enter the at-bat with a 1-2 count, runners at first and second and the score tied 1-1...He would ground into a 6-4-3 double play, adding insult to injury as they say...
PLAYER OF THE MONTH: INF Joey Terdoslavich was honored as the Carolina League Player of the Month for May as voted by the league's managers...Terdoslavich hit .304 (31-for-102) with four home runs and 20 RBI in 27 games last month...He is second in the league in home runs with 11 on the season...He also racked up 11 doubles in May, and currently has 22 total, tying him for second in the league as well...His average went from .243 to .279 during the month...The honor was the first weekly or monthly award of his career...So far in June, he is hitting just .224 with no home runs, and three RBI in 16 games...
TONIGHT'S OPPOSING PITCHER: RHP Brett Brach was selected in the 10th round of the 2009 draft out of Monmouth University...Spent most of 2010 in Low-A Lake County...Ranked fourth in the Midwest League in lowest walks per nine innings pitched (2.03)...Won Midwest League Pitcher of the Week award on July 26, 2010...Older brother, Brad, is currently pitching for AA San Antonio in the Padres system...Made spot-start for AA Akron on April 19...Pitched six innings and only gave up two hits...Earned win against Lynchburg on April 29, pitching five and one-third shutout innings...Took loss on May 16 at home against Lynchburg, giving up eight runs on six hits in four and two-thirds innings pitched...Currently 4-4 with a 3.06 ERA for Kinston...
