Keys Drop Third Straight as Myrtle Beach Clinches South
June 17, 2011 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Frederick Keys News Release
For the first time since 2008 the Myrtle Beach Pelicans are headed to the Carolina League Playoffs. Myrtle Beach punched its ticket to join the Keys in the dance by besting Frederick 6-5 Thursday night at BB&T Coastal Field. For the Keys it is three consecutive defeats.
Once again the Keys saw a starter struggle as starter Nathan Moreau only made it through 2 and 2/3rd innings. In the first inning Myrtle Beach loaded the bases with no outs but only scored one run. In the second inning the Keys tied it up on the first pitch as 1B Tyler Kolodny rifled his third home run of the year.
But the Pelicans would open a big early lead with two runs in the second inning and three more in the third.
Down 6-2 in the eighth inning, the Keys showed life with a big two out rally. LF Kipp Schutz reached on an error to spark the rally. Kolodny then singled to center and 3B Jonathan Schoop lined a ball to the left field wall scoring both runner to bring the Keys within 6-4. Schoop had three RBI's on the night. The Pelicans went to the pen but CF Miguel Abreu dumped a single into right field to bring Schoop home.
Within one, the Keys could not get anything going in the ninth inning as they went down in order to end the game.
Frederick stayed around due to outstanding work out of the bullpen from Jason Gurka and Clay Schrader. The duo combined to go 5 and 1/3rd innings without a run allowed.
The series continues with RHP Ryohei Tanaka on the hill on Saturday night in Myrtle Beach. First pitch is slated for 7:05 p.m. with airtime 6:45 p.m. on 1450-AM The Source.
The Keys return home after the all-star break, Thursday, June 23rd at 7:00 p.m. for a six-game home stand opening with Winston-Salem. Fireworks will follow all three weekend games. For tickets contact the Keys Box Office at 1-877-8-GO-KEYS or visit online at frederickkeys.com.
