Fresno Grizzlies News Release
Papillion, Ne.--Omaha Storm Chasers (61-62) shortstop Pedro Ciriaco's infield single in the bottom of the 11th inning proved to be the difference in a 5-4 11-inning win over the Fresno Grizzlies (57-65).
Omaha started its rally with one out on a single by designated hitter Johnny Giavotella. First baseman Ben Broussard followed with a single to center which advanced Giavotella to third base. Then it was left fielder Brian Fletcher. He hit a come backer to Fresno pitcher Dan Runzler (3-6) who was able to trap Giavotella between third-and-home, he eventually was tagged out, for the second out. However, Broussard moved to third, and Fletcher to second. With two out, it was on an 0-1 pitch when Ciriaco hit the dribbler in the direction of Fresno third baseman Chris Dominguez. He threw the ball to first but Ciriaco with his speed cleary beat it out, and clinched the game. Ciriaco's hit was the 18th for Omaha.
All the Fresno runs came in the fourth inning. A sacrifice fly by Johnny Monell, singles by Dominguez, and left fielder Kensuke Tanaka along with an RBI ground out by designated hitter Carter Jurica all produced the runs on an inning which was started on a single by shortstop Ehire Adrianza.
Grizzlies right-handed starter Justin Fitzgerald went six innings. He allowed ten hits, four runs (all earned), h walked one, and struck out four. In addition, he gave up two homers both solo clouts to Fletcher (4, 5).
Donnie Jospeh (4-3) pitched a shutout 11th inning for the win, while Runzler gave up one run (earned) in 1 2/3 innings.
Right-hander Brian Sanches who was the designated second pitcher for Omaha gave up four runs (all earned) on five hits in six innings. He walked three, and stuck out two. Left-hander Danny Duffy who is supposed to be promoted to Kansas City for a start this weekend pitched one perfect inning as the starter by design. He had two strikeouts.
Game two of this scheduled four-game series will be on Tuesday night at Werner Park with a 5:05 PST first pitch. Right-hander Mitch Lively (5-5) will pitch for Fresno against Omaha right-hander Felipe Paulino (0-0).
GRIZZLIES PAWS: Fresno is 17-18 in one-run games and 7-6 in extra inning contests.
