Peavey Pushes B-Mets to Win in Opener, 5-1

BINGHAMTON, NY - Greg Peavey allowed just one run over six innings and the Binghamton Mets supported him with five unanswered runs en route to a 5-1 win over the Portland Sea Dogs on Friday night at NYSEG Stadium. Peavey, pitching for the third straight time against the Sea Dogs, stranded five runners in scoring position in his first win of the season.

Portland got on the board early against Peavey. With one out in the top of the first, Deven Marrero doubled down the left-field line. The next batter, Travis Shaw, followed with a double of his own to plate Marrero and give the Sea Dogs a 1-0 lead.

Binghamton trailed until the third inning. Kyle Johnson started a rally against Portland starter and former Binghamton University Bearcat Mike Augliera with a single to center field. After a single by Wilfredo Tovar, Darrell Ceciliani pushed both runners up with a sacrifice bunt. Brian Burgamy tied the game with a sacrifice fly to left field.

The B-Mets picked up where they left off to start the fourth inning. With one out and Kevin Plawecki at first, Augliera's pick-off attempt went wide of the base. Following a Jayce Boyd walk, Dustin Lawley sent a bouncer back to the mound. Augliera fielded cleanly, but fired erratically to second, allowing Plawecki to score the go-ahead run. Johnson doubled Binghamton's lead with an RBI single to left and Wilfredo Tovar made it a three-run cushion by legging out a run-producing fielder's choice.

Peavey battled through his final two innings to preserve the lead. With two outs in the fifth, Portland loaded the bases on a double and two walks. Peavey avoided harm by inducing Shaw to ground out. The righty worked around a one-out single by Blake Swihart and capped his night with a scoreless sixth.

Binghamton tacked on an insurance run in the sixth. Plawecki led off with a double and advanced to third on a fly out. With one away, Johnson grounded into a force out and Plawecki scored to give Binghamton a 5-1 advantage.

Cody Satterwhite took over in the seventh and posted two scoreless innings of relief. Jon Velasquez worked around two hits in a shutout ninth.

Peavey (1-1) struck out four and walked two while scattering six hits to collect his first win of the season. Augliera (2-2) was tagged for five runs (two earned) on six hits over seven innings in the loss.

The B-Mets (13-10) continue their home stand against the Portland Sea Dogs with a doubleheader on Saturday. Binghamton will send LHP Darin Gorski to the bump against LHP Henry Owens in game one.
