
Johnson Promoted to Portland, Saturday Debut Scheduled

Portland, Maine - The Boston Red Sox have promoted LHP Brian Johnson to the Portland Sea Dogs and placed infielder Sean Coyle on the disabled list (retroactive to April 29). Johnson will make his Double-A debut on Saturday afternoon in Game two of Portland's doubleheader at Binghamton.
Johnson, the number 31 overall pick in 2012, went 3-1, 3.86 ERA (11 ER/25.2 IP) in five starts with the High-A Salem Red Sox (Carolina League) this season. The former standout at the University of Florida is Ranked by Baseball America as the No. 14 prospect overall in the Red Sox' system and the 3rd best LHP prospect.
On April 18th, the lefty worked six perfect innings (5 strikeouts) at Winston-Salem. He recorded his first win on Opening Day for the Salem Sox, hurling five strong innings on four hits, two runs (one earned) and seven strikeouts.
The Red Sox took Johnson as a sandwich pick between (31 st overall) in the June 2012 draft, as compensation for the Red Sox losing Jonathan Papelbon (former Sea Dog) to free agency.
Last season, Johnson went a combined 2-6, 2.54 ERA (24 ER/85.0 IP) between the Gulf Coast Red Sox (2 GS), Low-A Greenville (15 GS), and High-A Salem (2 GS). He began the year in Greenville, fanning 69 in 69.0 IP and a 2.87 ERA (22 ER). Spent time on the disabled list from June 4-July 21 and had a 2-game rehab stint with GCL Sox. After August 24th promotion to Salem, held opponents to 2 runs in 11.0 IP (1.64 ERA). Johnson started Game 2 of the Mills Cup Semifinals at Myrtle Beach (4.0 IP, 3 R, 2 ER).
Johnson went 22-12 with a 3.85 ERA (104 ER/243.1 IP) and 196 strikeouts in 49 appearances/46 starts in three seasons at the University of Florida. He hit .324 AVG (155-for-478) with 29 doubles, 3 triples, 15 homers, and 91 RBI. He was a member of USA Collegiate National Team in 2010 and 2011, while also playing with Yarmouth-Dennis of the Cape Cod League in 2011. Named Florida Today Player of the Year and Brevard County Player of the Year as a junior in 2008 at Cocoa Beach High School
