New Hampshire Fisher Cats News Release
NEW BRITAIN, Conn. - A.J. Jimenez and Brad Glenn each recorded a sacrifice fly on Friday night, but the Fisher Cats (12-14) couldn't come up with the big hit when they needed it, losing to New Britain (8-17) 4-2.
The Rock Cats took the lead right away as Nate Hanson slugged a two-out homer against starter Casey Lawrence (L; 2-2) in the bottom of the first inning.
For a while, it appeared that home run would be enough for New Britain. The Rock Cats couldn't muster anything more through five innings against Lawrence. Their one opportunity to add to their lead ended with a runner getting picked off second base in the third.
The Fisher Cats, meanwhile, missed an opportunity in the fifth inning, stranding two men. Jimenez delivered his sacrifice fly in the sixth, but they left men at the corners to leave the game tied at 1-1.
It wouldn't stay tied for long as old friend Kenny Wilson sparked a rally in the bottom of the sixth. Part of the Fisher Cats last week, Wilson was claimed off waivers by the Minnesota Twins. Assigned to the Rock Cats, he singled home the go-ahead run in the sixth inning on Friday night. Two batters later, he watched Kennys Vargas smack a two-run homer to put New Britain on top, 4-1.
The Fisher Cats stranded another runner in the seventh, and stranded two more in the eight despite the sac fly from Glenn. They had one more chance in the ninth, putting runners at second and third, only to watch Jimenez strike out to end the game.
All told, New Hampshire went 0-for-10 with runners in scoring position, stranding ten total runners. In their last five games, all decided by two runs or less, New Hampshire is just 3-for-38 (.079) with runners in scoring position.
The series continues on Saturday night at 6:35 p.m. as Aaron Sanchez looks for his second Double-A victory. He'll be opposed by New Britain lefty Pat Dean. Tom Gauthier will have the radio call beginning at 6:15 p.m. on WGIR 610 AM and www.nhfishercats.com.
After the weekend in Connecticut, the Fisher Cats are back home on Monday for a three-game set against the Binghamton Mets (New York Mets). The series includes a night to recognize youngsters who complete the Northeast Delta Dental Oral Health Challenge on Monday, a Hood Kids Club night on Tuesday, and Manchester Schools Day at 10:35 a.m. on Wednesday. Tickets are available at the team box office, by calling (603) 641-2005, and by visiting www.nhfishercats.com.
