PawSox Win Third Straight; Top Red Wings 5-4

(Pawtucket, RI) - Pawtucket scored five unanswered runs to make up an early deficit and the PawSox held off a ninth-inning rally by stranding the tying and go-ahead runners on base to defeat the Rochester Red Wings, 5-4, on Thursday night in the opener of a two-game series before 4,922 fans at McCoy Stadium.
Starter Edwin Escobar pitched six strong innings, while Jonathan Roof slugged a go-ahead two-run homer in the sixth. Pawtucket won a season-high sixth-consecutive home game and improved to 3-0 on the current homestand.
Escobar (3-3) scattered four hits and four walks in his six innings of work during his final Pawtucket appearance of the season.
Rochester scored a pair of runs in the ninth charged to reliever Jonathan Aro, and the Red Wings still had runners still on first and second with one out facing Dayan Diaz. Diaz got Jose Martinez to fly out to right for the second out of the ninth, then Reynaldo Rodriguez hit a smash to third base.
Deven Marrero, playing the hot corner for only the second time in his professional career, fielded a difficult hop on Rodriguez grounder and took it to third for a force out that ended the game. It was Diaz' third save of the season.
Rochester took a 2-0 lead against Escobar by scoring single runs in the fourth and fifth innings, highlighted by Rodriguez' 16th long ball of the season. But after shutting out the PawSox through four innings, Red Wings starter Logan Darnell permitted two runs in the fifth and was pulled from the game with two outs.
Darnell's throwing error on an infield single by Marco Hernandez plated Marrero all the way from first base to cut the deficit to 2-1, then Carlos Rivero lined an RBI single to plate Hernandez with the tying run.
Reliever Cole Johnson (0-1) allowed a one-out single to Humberto Quintero in the sixth, then Roof followed with a blast over the left-centerfield fence (2) to put Pawtucket in front, 4-2. Quintero hit an RBI single in the seventh to score an unearned run against reliever Tim Shibuya and close out the PawSox scoring.
The finale of the series is scheduled for Friday night with first pitch at 7:05pm, as the PawSox try for the fourth sweep in the last five series played. Right-hander Shawn Haviland (5-9, 4.30) will get the start for Pawtucket while the Red Wings counter with lefty Pat Dean (11-11, 2.91).
