Syracuse Mets News Release
Allentown, PA (September 3, 2015) - The Syracuse Chiefs beat the Lehigh Valley IronPigs, 2-1, Thursday night at Coca-Cola Park. Syracuse scored runs in the eighth and ninth innings to break a tie game each time. Richard Bleier allowed just a run in seven and one-third innings.
Syracuse (64-76) broke a scoreless tie for the game's first run in the eighth inning. Emmanuel Burriss doubled to start the inning off IronPigs reliever Seth Rosin. Jason Martinson followed with a single to left field. Burriss stopped at third, and Martinson moved to second on a missed-catch error on third baseman Russ Canzler on the throw from the outfield. After Matt Skole was intentionally walked, Scott Sizemore his a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring Burriss to give the Chiefs a 1-0 lead.
Lehigh Valley (62-78) immediately tied the game in the bottom of the eighth. Tyler Pastornicky doubled with one out off Chiefs starter Richard Bleier. Brian Bogusevic followed with an infield single to put two runners on. The Chiefs went to the bullpen and Sam Runion came into the game. Russ Canzler hit Runion's second pitch under the glove of a diving Martinson at third base, plating Pastornicky and tying the score at one.
The Chiefs grabbed the lead for good in the top of the ninth. Isaac Ballou pinch-hit for Runion in his first Triple-A game and walked with two outs. Ballou reached second on a stolen base. Darin Mastroianni then hit a hard ground ball under Chase d'Arnaud's glove at shortstop. Ballou raced home on the d'Arnaud error to give the Chiefs a 2-1 lead.
Right-hander Juan Gutierrez closed the game out with three straight strikeouts against his former team in the ninth. That closed an outstanding performance by the Syracuse staff in the game. Bleier allowed just six hits and one run in seven and one-third innings, walking one and striking out four.
The Chiefs and IronPigs return to Coca-Cola Park for the final game of a short two-game series Friday night at 7:05 p.m. Scott McGregor is scheduled to start for Syracuse opposite Sean O'Sullivan for Lehigh Valley.
