Charlotte Knights News Release
(UPTOWN CHARLOTTE, NC) - Three home runs in a five-run seventh inning propelled the Charlotte Knights to a come-from-behind 11-7 win over the Durham Bulls on Thursday at BB&T Ballpark in front of a crowd of 9,781 fans. In all, the Knights hit five runs on the afternoon en route to their 73rd win of the season.
Down by a score of 7-3 in the bottom of the seventh inning, the Knights charged past the Bulls with an exciting offensive surge. Drew Garcia led the inning off with a walk and Chris Jacobs followed with a two-run home run off Durham reliever Andrew Bellatti (2-1, 5.40). Chris Curley followed with a solo home run, which pulled the Knights to within one run, down 7-6. The offensive power surge did not stop there.
Three batters later, Dayan Viciedo roped a two-run home run over the center field fence to give the Knights an 8-6 lead at that point. The home run was Viciedo's seventh of the season and 47th as a member of the Charlotte Knights, which put him in a tie for fifth all-time in Knights franchise history with Jeff Liefer.
One inning later, the Knights continued to score runs via the home run ball. Jacobs and Curley ignited the offense with back-to-back one-out singles. Then it was Micah Johnson's turn.
Johnson hit a three-run home run off Durham reliever Parker Markel, which put the Knights ahead of the Bulls by a score of 11-7. Johnson finished the game 1-for-3 with the home run, two runs scored, and three RBIs.
Overall on Thursday, the Knights combined for five home runs on the day. Matt Tuiasosopo connected on a two-run home run in the fourth inning, his 18th of the season. The home run was his second in as many days. Charlotte reliever Blake Smith (1-2, 3.41) allowed just one hit over two shutout innings for the win.
Boog Powell paced the Durham offense with four hits and four RBIs. He homered in the third inning off Charlotte starter Scott Carroll, who allowed four runs (two earned) on seven hits over 3.2 innings pitched. He did not factor in the decision.
The two teams will conclude their three-game series from BB&T Ballpark on Friday --the final home game in Uptown Charlotte during the 2015 regular season. Charlotte RHP Terance Marin will get the start against Durham LHP Blake Snell. Gates open at 6:00 p.m. for the 7:05 p.m. finale. Post-game fireworks will light up the sky courtesy of BB&T and 107.9 The Link.
