Pawtucket Red Sox News Release
(Buffalo, NY) - The Pawtucket Red Sox rallied for four runs in the ninth inning, defeating the Buffalo Bisons, 7-4, on Sunday afternoon at Coca-Cola Field for the two-game series sweep and a 4-0 start to the season's first road trip.
Pawtucket (4-5) trailed, 4-3, entering the ninth after Matt Dominguez hit an eighth-inning, two-run home run against Anthony Varvaro (1-0) for Buffalo's (4-7) first lead of the game.
But the PawSox responded with a ninth inning that would tie their biggest frame of the season. Blake Swihart, making his 2016 Pawtucket debut, led off against Bisons reliever David Aardsma (0-1) with his first hit of the game, a double to left field. Sam Travis followed with a single. After Justin Maxwell walked, Chris Marrero tied the game with a deep sacrifice fly to center field.
Then with two outs, Sean Coyle snapped an 0-for-21 stretch with a two-run single that gave the PawSox the lead. Deven Marrero would add Pawtucket's fourth run of the inning with a RBI single.
Wesley Wright shut the door with a perfect bottom of the ninth to record his first save of the season. Rusney Castillo helped Wright's cause by robbing Dalton Pompey of a leadoff extra-base hit with a spectacular running catch against the centerfield fence.
Fellow Cuban Roenis Elias allowed two runs in 5.2 innings in his second start of the season. Jesus Montero drove in both of Buffalo's runs against Elias.
Pawtucket took four separate leads in the game, concluding with the ninth-inning rally. The Red Sox grabbed a pair of early leads thanks to Travis' first-inning sacrifice fly and Deven Marrero's RBI double in the second inning. Marrero reached base five times in the game with a double, two singles and two walks.
The PawSox again snapped a tie in the sixth inning on an RBI single from Castillo.
Jorge Marban tossed 1.1 scoreless innings of relief for Pawtucket. He induced a double-play groundball from the first batter he faced, David Adams, to maintain a 3-2 lead after six innings.
The PawSox have won six straight games at Coca-Cola Field dating to last season. Pawtucket has won four road games in a row for the first time since the 2014 season.
The PawSox continue on the road to begin a four-game series at Rochester tomorrow at 6:35 p.m. Lefthander Henry Owens (1-1, 0.75) will look to build off his dominating start to the season for Pawtucket, while Tyler Duffey (0-0, 2.08) will make the start for the Red Wings. Radio coverage begins on WHJJ and throughout the PawSox radio network at 6:05 p.m.
The PawSox will return to McCoy Stadium on Friday for the first contest of a five-game homestand, beginning with a three-game series against Lehigh Valley. Good seats for all games in the series are still available at the McCoy Stadium box office, by calling (401) 724-7300 or by visiting pawsox.com.
