LOUISVILLE, Ky.- On a beautiful Sunday afternoon at Louisville Slugger Field the Louisville Bats ended the four game series against the Toledo Mud Hens. In the first extra inning game of the season, the Bats (3-5) beat the Mud Hens (5-2) 3-2 in 11 innings. DH Jesse Winker hit the walk off single to bring in the winning run.
Louisville RHP A.J. Morris had a no-hitter through five innings and the game was scoreless heading into the sixth. Mud Hens C Miguel Gonzalez knocked a single to left field on the first pitch of the sixth inning for the first Toledo hit of the afternoon. The Mud Hens did not stop there though, when the next batter DH Cameron Maybin hit an RBI double to bring in Gonzalez , making it 1-0 Toledo.
The Bats had their bats rolling in the sixth with a single to second base by DH Jesse Winker, followed by a deep line drive to center field from 2B Jermaine Curtis to bring in Winker to tie the ball game up at one a piece.
The Bats runs didn't stop there, however. As 3B Seth Mejias-Brean reached on an error, and a heads up play from LF Steve Selsky, who scored from second gave the Bats a 2-1 lead after six innings.
Mud Hens SS Argenis Diaz walked to lead off the eighth inning. After a 2B Tommy Field single, Gonzalez hit a sacrifice bunt to advance Diaz and Field to third and second respectively. Maybin, the next Mud Hen hitter, singled, scoring Diaz and tying the game at two.
The game went to extra innings, and the Bats had a golden opportunity to end it in the bottom of the 10th. A single, double, and hit batter loaded them up for RF Kyle Waldrop, but he grounded into a fielder's choice as the Mud Hens cut off the run at home. PH Ramon Cabrera struck out and C Chris Berset grounded out, sending the game to the 11th.
In the bottom of the 11th, CF Jose Peraza hit a one out single and advanced to second on a wild pitch. That set the stage for Winker, who collected his second hit of the day, a walk-off single to left field, giving the Bats the win.
RHP Drew Hayes (1-0, 6.23) earned the win, pitching two innings. He allowed one walk and two strikeouts. RHP Warwick Saupold (0-1, 3.60) took the loss for the Mud Hens.
Louisville begins a three game series with the Columbus Clippers tomorrow night at Louisville Slugger Field. Louisville's RHP Josh Smith(1-0.00) will take his first pitch set for 7:05 p.m. against Clippers LHP Ryan Merritt.
