Toledo Outlasted in Extra-Inning Pitcher's Duel
April 17, 2016 - International League (IL1)
Toledo Mud Hens News Release
Toledo looked to sweep Louisville and extend their winning streak to four games on a beautiful Sunday afternoon in Louisville at Louisville Slugger Field, but the Hens were outlasted in extra innings by a score of 3-2. It took eleven innings, but the Bats managed to pick up their first win against the Mud Hens during the 2016 season.
The series finale featured a premier pitcher's duel between Toledo's Michael Fulmer, who went 5 1/3 innings giving up one earned run while scattering five hits and striking out seven, and Louisville's AJ Morris who also pitched 5 1/3 innings giving up one earned run and two hits while striking out six Hens.
The Hen's offense woke up in the sixth inning when Miguel Gonzalez broke up Morris' no hit bid with a sharp single to right field, which was followed up by a Cameron Maybin double in the gap to drive in Gonzalez, giving the Mud Hens a 1-0 lead. Louisville responded with two runs of their own in the bottom of the sixth inning to take a 2-1 lead courtesy of an RBI single from Jermaine Curtis and a Michael Crotta fielding error, who pitched 2/3 of an inning while striking out one.
Toledo knotted things up at two in the eighth inning when Maybin notched his second hit and second RBI of the game after the Mud Hens played small ball and utilized a Gonzalez sacrifice bunt to move Argenis Diaz into scoring position.
With a chance to win the game in the top of the ninth inning, Toledo had runners on second and third with one out, but Lousiville's JC Ramirez shut the door with back-to-back strikeouts. The Bats had their own chance in the bottom of the tenth inning, but Toledo's Warwick Saupold meticulously managed his way out of a bases loaded extra-inning one out jam.
The Hens and Saupold were unable to squeak out of another jam in the bottom of the eleventh inning as Jose Peraza came around to score on a Jesse Winker walk-off single for the Bats.
Saupold finished with 2 1/3 innings pitched, allowing one run while giving up five hits and striking out one, and Jose Valdez also pitched for tremendously for Toledo, going two innings while allowing no runs on only one hit and striking out three batters.
Maybin who is on a rehab assignment for the Detroit Tigers, was lifted in the top of the tenth inning for a pinch runner, Drew Longley, after he was hit by a pitch. The Mud Hens are back in action tomorrow night at 7:05 pm for the first game of a three game series against the Indianapolis Indians at Victory Field. The 5-2 Mud Hens will send Matt Boyd to the mound for his third start of the season.
