SWB Game Notes

April 17, 2016 - International League (IL1)
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders News Release

DOUBLED UP: The RailRiders dropped an 8-4 decision to the Syracuse Chiefs on Saturday afternoon at PNC Field. The loss snapped a five-game SWB winning streak while the Chiefs captured their first win in the series.

SLAMMING THE GAVEL: On Friday, Aaron Judge posted a pair of hits including his first homer of the season, an opposite-field shot to right field on a 3-2 pitch in the first inning. Through eight games, he has slashed .343/.378/.514/.893 by going 12-for-35 with four extra-base hits. He has been particularly effective against right-handed pitchers (9-for-22, 3XBH, .409/.458/.636/1.095). Judge has hit second in all eight of the team's games thus far, something he did in just 10 of his 61 games played at Triple-A a season ago. Most of his SWB time last year came in the four (21 games) or five-hole (27 games). However, he mostly hit second at Double-A in 2015 (30 games) and at both levels his best performances came in the two hole. At Double-A last year he slashed .310/.370/.579/.949 batting second. At Triple-A, the numbers stood .333/.413/.385/.798.

SWISHALICIOUS: Nick Swisher signed a minor league deal with the Yankees and joined the RailRiders Thursday. Over a dozen MLB seasons, including four with the Yankees from 2009-12, he has hit .249/.351/.447/.799. An All-Star with the Yankees in 2010 when he hit .288/.359/.511/.870 with 29 home runs, he was last in the big leagues last season with both Cleveland and Atlanta. He went 1-for-4 with an infield single Thursday night as the starting first baseman. Friday, he went 2-for-4 with a go-ahead double in the sixth as the DH. Yesterday, he went 1-for-3 with a pair of walks and one strikeout.

R&R: Rob Refsnyder drove in two runs with a sac fly and an RBI single. His second-inning hit stretched SWB's longest hitting streak of 2016 to seven games. Only Charlotte's Carlos Sanchez, with an active nine-gamer entering today, has authored a longer string of swinging success in the IL this season.

GETTING DEFENSIVE: The RailRiders' seven-game error-free streak came to a close with a throwing miscue by Refsnyder while playing third base in the ninth. The team's only other error this season came on a grounder to Refsnyder at third base in the April 7 season opener versus Rochester. Last year's unit finished fifth in the league with a .982 fielding percentage. The franchise last led the league in fielding percentage at .983 when it did not have a home stadium en route to a division title in 2012. The 2016 RailRiders stand tied with Charlotte for the league lead in fielding percentage at .994.

THE NEW GUYS: Each of the two pitchers SWB tossed made their Triple-A debuts. Starter Ronald Herrera (0-1) tied his career-high in strikeouts with eight. He had reached that mark twice in Rookie ball and once with Double-A San Antonio (Padres) last season in a win at Northwest Arkansas (Royals) on Aug. 12. Herrera also gave up five runs, the highest earned run total he had allowed since giving up seven on July 13, 2014 versus South Bend while with Low-A Fort Wayne in the Midwest League. Behind him, reliever Dan Camarena fired the final four frames. The lefty, who missed all of last season, gave up three runs (two earned) on six hits including a home run by former RailRider Scott Sizemore.

OFF THE RAILS: Entering yesterday, the pitching staff had allowed two home runs over eight games...Syracuse launched a pair of big flies Saturday alone...Lane Adams made his SWB debut as the starting right fielder...He finished 0-for-4 with a walk and three strikeouts...Donovan Solano reached base three times for the second straight day...After going 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored on Friday, he posted a 2-for-4 effort on Saturday with an RBI and a walk...The RailRiders swiped a season-high three bases...Former RailRider/New York Yankee Brendan Ryan recorded his first hit of the season...His fourth-inning triple snapped an 0-for-12 start to the year...The Chiefs entered yesterday 9-for-56 (.161) before going 6-for-14 (.429) yesterday...The RailRiders lost for the first time with Eddy Rodriguez catching (2-1)...Rodriguez went 1-for-3 with a walk and a run scored.
