Patriots Rally For 5-4 Win In Game One Of Double Header

Bridgewater, NJ - The Somerset Patriots rallied from a 4-3 deficit in the bottom of the seventh inning to win 5-4 in the first game of the double header over the Camden Riversharks on Saturday night at TD Bank Ballpark.

In the bottom of the seventh inning, shortstop Anthony Granato and catcher Jason Belcher drew walks to start the inning. After third baseman Jeff Nettles advanced the runners on a sacrifice bunt, Joe Burke came in as a pinch runner for Belcher. Second baseman Matt Hagen was intentionally walked to load the bases and first baseman Teuris Olivares grounded to first and Camden first baseman Vito Chiaravalloti threw past the catcher on a play at the plate that allowed Granato and Burke to score for the win.

The Riversharks took an early lead in the top of the first inning after center fielder Wayne Lydon walked, advanced to second, stole third, and scored after shortstop Bryant Nelson hit into a fielder's choice for the 1-0 lead.

Camden added a run in the top of the fourth inning after a solo homerun by Chiaravalloti (9) to make the score 2-0.

The Patriots took the lead with three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Left fielder Elliott Ayala reached on an error and designated hitter Jon Nelson followed with an RBI double. Center fielder Sean Smith singled and stole second to put runners on second and third. After Granato drew a walk to load the bases, Belcher hit an RBI single to plate Nelson. Nettles closed out the scoring by drawing a bases loaded walk to score Smith for the lead.

The Riversharks regained the lead with two runs in the top of the sixth inning. Left fielder Garrett Guzman singled and scored on a two-run home run by designated hitter Brett Bonvechio (6).

Patriots reliever Jared Gothreaux (7-8) picked up the win with a scoreless 1.1 innings pitched. Camden reliever Felix Rodriguez (0-2) suffered the loss, allowing two unearned runs in 0.1 innings pitched.

The 2009 Somerset Patriots Season presented by Ford will continue at home with a 5:05 pm game against the Camden Riversharks on Sunday evening.
