Newark Bears News Release
The Newark Bears took both games of today's Saturday evening double header against the Long Island Ducks winning game one 13-3 and game two 5-3.
The Bears were out of the gate swinging, putting two runs on the board in the first after Sandy Madera crushed a two run double plating outfielder Charlton Jimerson and a sac fly of the bat of Willis Otanez which sent former NY Yankee D'Angelo Jiminez home.
Long Island scored two runs off of two hits in the third, including a George Lombard RBI double which plated Ray Navarrete.
The Bears came alive in the fifth inning, batting around to collect nine runs off of nine hits which included a two run homer off the bat of Rob Mackowiak, his tenth home run of the season and doubles from Charlton Jimerson, Sandy Madera and Michael Hernandez.
Starting pitcher Matt Smith took a no decision after tossing for four and a third innings and Chris Spurling notched the win. Long Island's Julie Manon recorded the loss after pitching for four innings, allowing eight earned runs.
In the second game, Long Island collected two runs in the first inning after Jose Herera launched a two run homer. The Bears quickly answered in the bottom of the first scoring two runs off of three hits including a double off the bat of Juan Tejeda, which plated D'Angelo Jiminez.
Newark scored runs in the second, third and forth innings, including a solo homerun from Juan Tejeda in the third. The Ducks added a run in the fifth off a solo home run from Dennis Donovan, but it wasn't enough to take the lead.
Hector Carrasco notched the win for Newark after tossing for five innings striking out two and allowing three runs. Former NL Rookie of the Year Scott Williamson pitched a hitless sixth, and newly signed right-hander Tracy Thorpe recorded the save after tossing a hitless seventh. Long Island's Troy Cate was on the mound the entire game, striking out seven Bears and giving up five earned runs, recording the loss.
The Bears conclude their three game series against the Ducks tomorrow at 7:05pm at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium. Before the game the Bears will host a very special ceremony to retire Roberto Clemente's #21 jersey in center field.
