Lancaster on Edge of Retrieving Cup

August 29, 2009 - Atlantic League (AtL)
Lancaster Stormers News Release

Matt Watson slammed a pair of home runs, and Michael Woods launched a grand slam as the Lancaster Barnstormers dropped the York Revolution, 10-4, in front of 7,326 Saturday evening at Clipper Magazine Stadium.

The win gave Lancaster a 10-5 lead in the War of the Roses season series. A win in either game of Sunday's 4:05 p.m. doubleheader will return the Community Cup to the east side of the Susquehanna River.

York starter Bob Zimmerman survived three walks and an error in the first two innings but could not get through the third. He walked Anderson Machado and L.J. Biernbaum to start the inning. Woods flied to right on a full count pitch, bringing up Watson. The Lancaster left fielder also took the count to 3-2 before jacking a pitch out of the ballpark to right center for his fourth homer of the season and a 3-1 lead.

A triple to right center by Machado and a single up the middle by Biernbaum made it 4-1 in the fourth before a brief rain delay halted play.

Jamie Baker, in his second Atlantic League appearance found additional trouble in the sixth. He walked Ryan Mulhern to start the inning. Jed Morris followed with a bunt at third baseman Matt Padgett, whose force play throw ended up in center field allowing runners to reach second and third. Cesar Suarez lined to second for the first out. York manager Andy Etchebarren opted to walk Lloyd Turner intentionally, a move that almost paid off as Baker struck out Machado for the second out and got ahead of Biernbaum, 0-1. However, Biernbaum bounced back to draw a walk, forcing home the fifth run.

Woods took advantage of the opportunity with a grand slam onto the picnic tents toward right center, chasing Baker. Watson greeted Corey Britton with a line drive homer down the right field line for a 10-1 lead.

Trey Hodges (3-4) allowed only three hits and a run into the seventh inning. Matt Esquivel and Jason Aspito began a York rally with back-to-back singles, and Kennard Jones walked to load the bases. After striking out Josh Johnson, Hodges gave way to Ross Peeples, who gave up a sacrifice fly to Liu Rodriguez and hit P.J. Rose with the bases loaded, allowing two of the runners to score.

Aspito was 3-for-4 and scored three runs for York. Jones was 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI.

The Sunday doubleheader will be accompanied by the annual crab feast in the picnic area at Clipper Magazine Stadium. Tickets for the all-you-can-eat two-hour buffet are $37.

Lancaster will send Neal Musser (0-2) and Ben Fritz (4-6) to the mound against Dan Foli (5-11) and Daryl Harang (7-11) for York. Both games will be seven innings.
