Pass the Tartar Sauce, Cyclones Beat Walleye 4-3
March 4, 2012 - ECHL (ECHL)
Cincinnati Cyclones News Release
TOLEDO, Ohio - Behind three shootout saves from Chet Pickard, the Cincinnati Cyclones (29-21-1-7) knocked off the Toledo Walleye (26-28-2-3) by a 4-3 final score in front of 6,569 at Huntington Center on Sunday evening. It was Cincinnati's first win in Toledo since December 9, 2011 and pulls them within three points of division-leading Kalamazoo.
Cincinnati exploded for three goals in the opening period as Garrett Wilson tipped in his 17th goal of the season at 4:21 followed by a Maury Edwards strike at the 10:23 mark. Then, toward the end of a Cyclones power play, Toledo goaltender Thomas McCollum (L, 28 saves, 6-6-0-2) misplayed the puck behind his net; the miscue allowed Pelech to grab the puck and feed Dan Eves in front, who lit the lamp at 17:22 to extend Cincinnati's cushion to 3-0 at the first intermission.
The Walleye took advantage of some Cincinnati turnovers in the second period to make it a close game again. Riley Emmerson deflected a point shot past Cyclones goaltender Chet Pickard (W, 31 12-10-0-2) at 9:31, making it 3-1. Then, just 38 seconds later, Joey Martin collected rebound in the low slot and potted a wrist shot to pull Toledo within a goal after 40 minutes.
Toledo managed to tie the game midway through the third as Todd Griffith beat Pickard through the legs at 9:05. Despite some excellent chances by both teams in the final minutes, neither could find the game-winner and the tilt was to be decided in the extra session. In overtime, both teams remained in a stalemate to force a shootout. Cincinnati raced out with goals in the first three rounds, as Eves, Mathieu Aubin, and Alain Goulet all lit the lamp. On the other end, Pickard stood tall, making three out of a possible four saves - including a denial of Todd Griffith in round four which sealed a 4-3 Cyclones win. It was just the third time Jarrod Skalde's team had prevailed in a shootout this season.
